I'm sure questions like this have been posted before so bear with me.

I have an 85 fj60 looking to get a locker for. Not sure what to look for as far as rear or front diff locks.

I know I can put a front diff on and disengage it when I'm in 2wd. Any experience with this?

So all in all: what should I do?
Front locker or rear?
E-locker /air locker?
What brands?

Edit: keep in mind that I'm a starving college student so I can't spend the most mullah. I try to save what I can.

Thank you! And any advice is great!

With such rudimentary questions, I would ask that you back up a step and ask yourself why you think you need a locker?

Have you been wheeling and realized a need for one? If so, I imagine that you would have a pretty good answer to the questions regarding front or rear, etc...

If I were adding a locking diff to a 60 series today I'd go with a Harrop, myself. But I dislike any form of automatic lockers generally.

I installed a Powertrax Lock-Right Locker when I was in college. I think this option or the Aussie Locker would be the "cheapest" option. Would be in about $400 after a new cork differential gasket and gear oil. Note - this would be for the rear axle only as it has an inspection cover.

The Lock Right and Aussie are both automatic lockers, they make some noise, and engage when one wheel rotates faster than the other (basically).

What do you deem that you need a locker for though? My first time wheeling I made it through some crazy terrain on OME lift and 33" All-Terrains.

I agree that you may want to hold off on the locker for now unless you are driving down something regularly that it would greatly help you out. Focus on how well the engine runs, the life left in it and the driveline in general.

I want to thank everybody for there input on my post. I know I can a bit rambunctious with my decisions. So I will take all of your advice into account and hold off of the locker situation for now. I got it into my head that I needed one because of my peers around me always telling me I needed one. I'll just have to show them my LandCruiser is more capable then what they think.

Thank you all for helping a young kid out! Have safe travels!

For a starving college student, $300 aussie/lockright in the rear and done. Or just nothing. This was me about 15 years ago. Frankly a starving college student should probably have a cheaper car or just ride the bus :o

Do you get stuck a lot? Where do you wheel?

Friends can make a person do lots of things that are unnecessary.

Used to go with a friend a lot where we would help each other out but he goes to school in Utah and my other friends don't have 4x4's. Maybe I should look for more friends.

Yeah I'm not gonna get a locker now until sometime into the future. Just save my money for now

The other friends that don't have 4x4's are the ones telling you you need a locker?

Go find a cheap winch on Craigslist. :)

No they don't know anything. Just from meeting people with 4x4's always tell me I can't do a lot of stuff without the lockers.

And I am buying a winch the next weekend:p

Given your relative lack of experience with Cruisers and off road driving in general, I'd invest the money for lockers into a 4x4 drivers training course first and learn to maximize the capability of your vehicle with open diffs.

Or find a local off road club and just go wheel..

I know how to 4wd and I'm experienced with cruisers just not so much the differentials. I was looking into lockers because I wanted to tackle larger obstacles such as the rubicon trail.

for small budget....aussie mechanical locker in the rear differential, if more $$ avaliable then in the front differential too. If plenty of $$...forget all that and install ARB air lockers front and back. Remember that mechanical lockers never turn off.

That's the best part of mechanical lockers, they don't turn off then you really need them. Every person I know with ARBs, or factory cable or elockers have had them fail at some point, and it's only when you need them. Air supply, wires, etc all add fail points. You have to be really hard on parts to have a Detroit fail you. I know it's not the nicest to drive on the road, and I probably wouldn't recommend you daily drive a truck with a rear Detroit. And, having a front Detroit in my mini-truck, I wouldn't recommend that either.

Remember that mechanical lockers never turn off.
