That's the best part of mechanical lockers, they don't turn off then you really need them. Every person I know with ARBs, or factory cable or elockers have had them fail at some point, and it's only when you need them. Air supply, wires, etc all add fail points. You have to be really hard on parts to have a Detroit fail you. I know it's not the nicest to drive on the road, and I probably wouldn't recommend you daily drive a truck with a rear Detroit. And, having a front Detroit in my mini-truck, I wouldn't recommend that either.

I agree for the hard core 4wheeler. I had a aussie locker in the front and a powertrax locker in the rear differential for some time. Until I wanted a solution I could control. now I have arb front and rear (install not complete on air system). For something DD I think the ARB is the perfect solution if you have the budget and likely offroad too, I'm sure there will be some issues over time with the air setup...but that's part of the game.

I've also noticed that the smaller tires make the impact of the locker while on the pavement worse (torque steer from the rear and ratcheting at low speed on hard surface, and feedback from the drivetrain on every shift with manual transmission).

A good idea is to go test drive someone else's truck with similar setup on the pavement if you plan to daily drive yorur truck with mechanical lockers....

a selectable locker is the best all around choice if you have the budget, in my view.

I've used the detroits on a few trucks and have been very satisfied. Relatively low cost, easy install and good working units.

I love lockers too, both auto and selectable.

But I do agree on waiting, especially if money is scarse. Save up for a cruiser budget, you'll need funds to dig into when rolling with cruisers. Baseline the rig well, and with a winch to get you out of trouble, you'll be having lots of good times!
