Random but - FJ55 owners what did you do to make your rear window roll up better? Mine seems to get bound up slightly and you need to help it along. it also does not close all the way in one corner. I assume its off a tooth on the gearing or somthing?

Tons of good info in this thread in the 55 section at the bottom of forums.

I’ve had the felt in channel bind up causing significant restriction. One thing I tried was also spraying some silicone along the channel to help the window travel and this was helpful. Not sure it was right thing to do but it worked.

Clean the contacts for all the electrical in system - corrosion loses power. Take the motor apart and clean and relube it and the gears/shafts in the drive. +1 clean and lube felt/track.

Don't assume that. Take off the cover and watch it work, there's lots of things to go wrong in there. The long piece of metal at the bottom of the glass can rust out, the connecters between the arms and the long metal piece can break. Felt bunches up and rails get bent. If the window goes up at all the gears are probably meshed correctly. Those gears have very heavy springs and and the arms will take off the tip of a finger if you try to fool with them.

(remove the safety switch)
Or just put a zip-tie around the safety switch box that holds the plunger in. When you want safety back you move the zip-tie off the plunger but leave it there for the next time you need it.

^that
take the back cover off and run it up and down with the key (remove the safety switch)
the metal piece at the bottom channel what a problem on mine
and take off the gear cover, check the gear, clean and lube
for what ever reason my key switch is finicky some times it works and some times it does not. Like you all said I just gotta open that bad boy up and see whats going on inside the tailgate. going to work on the keyed switch too because it would make it easier to get it back up instead of using the dash switch. Ill look at it and take some pictures here soon,

@greenbeast already linked the definitive article on these rear windows. You should really read that thread before you open things up. Also you can bypass that safety switch with a 3" jumper wire in the connector strip inside the tailgate. That modification is well documented in the thread. Most of these types of questions have been answered many times in the 55 section. Great place to search when looking for 55 specific information.

I actually went in there to do that mod and somebody has done this already to mine. I have been in mine before. But Ill be sure to re look over the information in the 55 section.

I disassembled my key switch that didn’t work. Cleaned it up with brass wire brush and crocus cloth. Reassembled and it worked great. Nice do inside by the wood stove project.

Hi everyone! New FJ55 owner here. I'm working on getting my rear window regulator functional again. I have removed the regulator, inspected the plastic gear, and tested the motor - all good. My issue is the arms are not properly clocked. Any advice on getting them in sync again?

Thank you for the reply Charlie! I haven't found a video as of yet on my specific issue. I'll check out the link you posted and see what I can find. I did get the factory manual with my truck and though it has a ton of information, it doesn't describe how to realign the arms.

They aren’t supposed to be equal. IIRC, 4 teeth or so off is where you want them.

@jadesculptor read the thread linked in post 2 above.

Edit: be super careful working with that mechanism. Those springs are very strong and the teeth can easily take a finger off. Once you pull the motor there is nothing stopping the teeth from moving.

My issue ended up being the rear tailgate not latching tight enough. adjusted the tailgate and now it zips up and down fast. I am going to take the regulator all back out again soon to replace the rear license plate lamp soon though...

I really wish north america got the Austrailian spec manual roll up rear window.... and barn door options. although I like the tailgate.

Thank you WarDamnEagle! With that knowledge, my regulator may be just fine. I'll just clean the regulator, fix the broken wire in the tailgate, install the new channel rubber, and reassemble. Again, thank you all for the quick reply. This community is awesome! And Gary S.'s post is gold!

Glad to help. This section of the Forum is great but sometimes, particularly with questions specific to the FJ55, you will get more knowledgeable replies in the 55 section: FJ55 Iron Pig Preservation Society - https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/fj55-iron-pig-preservation-society.51/
