Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself and my build. I have a 1973 fj40, must the parts are there, but at the same time lots of things are missing. I will be using a 2000 tundra with a 2UZ as the donor truck. I have not gotten very far yet, so far just tuning up the tundra before I pull the engine. Below is a list of what I have plans for.

1973 FJ40
2000 tundra 2UZ engine
1993 toyota pickup R150 manual trans
1993 toyota pickup transfer case
using the original 1973 fj40 rear axle
using a 1975 front fj40 axle with disc brakes
I have a 2nd gen toyota pickup power steering box.
Ordered the OME suspension for it already
planning to use Akina Bell housing

I am sure there will be much much more, but for now that's where I'll start. I have searched and searched the web for information, and it seems like this forum has the best information so far. I do also have a 1994 Toyota pickup that I swapped a 1UZ into about 50,000 miles ago, its my summer daily driver!. One thing I could use is a Tundra FSM if anyone has it.

Welcome to Mud!

Looks like a great build plan. You may know this already, your tcase rear output is centered and your FJ40 rear axle is offset.

That rear output is also higher than the Cruiser tcase making driveline angles an issue.
Also, that ps box from a 2nd gen truck is less than ideal as well.

I did notice that not sure if I can get away with the offset if I use a double cardan joint on the transfer and a cvj on the axle end? I need to stop figure that part out..

Can I get away with worse drive line angles if I use CVJ joints on the drive shaft?

As for the ps box, what are other choices out there? From what I have read it's either this or a Chevy box?

I should mention this will be a summer cruiser and won't see a ton of off road and when it does it won't be rock climbing. Back woods and maybe some mud.

I had a mini truck tcase in a 64 40 I built. I rotated the rear axle up to point at the output and ran a cv joint. This worked but was not the best. I also used a centered rear diff.

As for the mini truck ps box, it mounts outside the frame, which is not ideal on a 40. There are many better choices.

All the answers to any 40 question are here.................you just gotta search and read.

Why not a 2UZ/H55/split case? Seems the better choice to me.

Probably because he just already has these parts lying around, but I agree. That does seem better. H55 is a good tranny

Only because I have the parts already, they are cheap and mostly easy to find are my area. I put a 1uz behind the same trans with no issues for 50k miles

I'm sorry to be this guy, but why do all you guys in the US put the R150 in cruisers?

I can't speak for the whole US but at least here in MI cruisers are pretty rare regardless of the year and make. so using any cruiser parts during a swap is hard / expensive. The R150 was behind the 4runner and the pickup for many years and are much easer to come by. For me another reason is to commonise my spare parts. I already have a Pickup with a 1UZ / R150 combo, just makes it easy for me.

Going through the transmission and upgrading the thrust washer to the one from marlin. Also through a couple of the heavy duty shift forks in from marlin crawler.

Just fitting it in for the first time to see how things fit. So far looks like I will not be using the mini truck PS gear box anymore. I am now going to try out the Astro van steering box, seems like the best fitting one out of the choices I have researched. The options seem to be: mini truck, 60/80 series in the wheel well, saginaw box that goes right behind the font bumper, or the IFS mini truck. Out of those the Astro van one fits in the engine bay and looks the best out of the bunch, not to mention there are tons of those around for cheap in my area. I picked one up today at the scrap yard, but have not fit it in there yet. Only downfall I can see with it at the moment is I will need to do a oil filter relocation, but that's not a big deal.

I know that with my setup the offset rear diff is not ideal. So I came across a full float rear out of an 80 series. Now I have done some research and it looks like I can make it a centered diff, and for the axle shafts I will need to use two of the short ones, and the axle width in the end will be within an 1" of the original 40 width. They are super rare by me, so I couldn't pass it up, not 100% i'll use it, but sounds like a good idea anyway! I always like a strange challenge. I will still keep the rear suspension leaf spring, so lots of cutting to do on this.
