FJ40 and Power Steering suggestions

Are the kits to rebuild a 62 series pump and box still available? I can get the hole cruiser for $400.00, but not sure of the condition of the parts and would assume they would need rebuilt. This sounds like the easiest way to put power steering in my 82 FJ40 (it should of come with it).

Yes, they are. If you have the space to get the whole truck, take it! You can more than make that up selling parts off it if you are willing to get a little dirty pulling the parts.
If it's a 62, then you also have 90% of the parts needed for a 2FE build ;)

Anyone with mini truck PS running 35's?

Just curious for some added feedback... as I have 33's and mini PS now

Been running 35x12.5's on mine for over 12 years with mini truck P/S. It's not Saginaw but it works fine. Run a cheap tranny cooler if you go that route. Your pump will thank you for it later!

Does that work on a 40? I've been searching but haven't found much besides using 80 TR for hi-steer conversion.

There may be more than one, but I do know of one rig that is running the 80 box with a 3fe pump. Rig is locked on 315s and driver seems to be very happy with the steering. John

Something else to throw out there. I have a PS unit from an 82 Toyota Pickup 2wd. Its complete. I have it on my 79 2wd pickup but I no longer drive it. Would it work? The gearbox points downward. I need to look closer at it this weekend.

I don't think so. It is not configured properly to connect to the relay rod.

If you run an 80 box, you will likely have to swap out the pitman arm. I thought of running that pitman arm since it has less drop than the 60 pitman arm, but it has a curve to it and I waasn't sure how that would affect the steering.

as far as I know, my pitman arm is from the 80

If you were able to use the stock curved 80 series pitman arm, that is good information and will save folks some money in the swap. Can you get a picture?

Sure.:hillbilly:

The '80 arm is flatter than the '60 arm. Ether will work on SUA, but the '80 arm has more clearance. There isn't much room on SOA, so a flat arm is likely needed.

Some parts observations/comparisons between a '60 and '80 box: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=8786579&postcount=426

I wouldn't run the older type pump with an '80 box, the older pumps are less efficient. The newer vane type pump from the 3FE is a stronger pump, better matched for the bigger bore of the '80 box.

Really? I hadn't considered that the pumps had changed. I am running a pump of unknown age, though probably 1979 since that is where the stock PS setup I was running before came from. I am running an FJ80 box on my 40.

Are there any other pumps, other than Saginaw that will fit in the stock 40 location that are a good match for the 80 box?

I guess I could bypass this issue by running hydro assist? :grinpimp:

Would the effectiveness of the ram assist be limited by the lesser output of the earlier FJ60 type pump?

Glad someone mentioned the difference in pumps - been trying to find a reasonably priced pump as I already have a really nice leak-free and tight 60 series box . What years would the 3FE pump be found and how does the mounting bracket system work on the 2F ? Need some details here , would love to get this done this coming year .

The steering may have some lag in it if the pump is low on volume. Not sure about the stock 60 or 80 pump, but a type 2 saginaw pump is pretty small and can be had with ample volume/pressure. Need a place for an external reservoir though. .

The 3FE pump mounts on the passenger side of the head, the mount holes have been in all of the motors that I have checked. They are vane type, the shaft/pulley is supported by a replaceable ball bearing, have less o-rings/places to leak, are easier to repair and in my experience, are more reliable.

The earlier pump, mounts on the driver side. Are slipper type, more complex/fiddly to repair, the shaft/pulley is only supported by a bushing and haven't found a replacement if worn.

Have used/built both, but prefer the vane type. My observation; when equipped with the vane type pump, steering is more responsive, stronger and takes more beating to overheat the fluid, likely has less internal friction, more efficient?

Pix, first the vane type:

Then the slipper:
