Great info , thanks for that . If the later pump mounts to the passenger side I'd assume the alternator either mounts lower or on the driver's side ? Problem here is there just isn't hardly any Cruisers in this whole general area - rust has killed pretty much all of them including later models . I have access to network type boneyards so just need year and model spreads to find what I need .

The slipper type is most common on the FJ60, '82-78, mounts on the driver side of the block, early motors don't have the proper mount holes in the block. The vane type is found in the FJ62, '88-90 and FJ80, '90-92, mounts on the passenger side of the head, using the engine lift hook holes.

I wouldn't run the older type pump with an '80

If there was a feasible option, I wouldn't run an 80 box with an 80 pump, based on my experience on an 80.

The 3FE pump mounts on the passenger side of the head, the mount holes have been in all of the motors that I have checked.

Are you using the 3FE specific mount and claiming there are provisions for in the earlier heads?

If yes, then are there two different 3FE pump mounting configurations, one with and one without AC?

The kits to add a 60 p/s set up are expensive! I found a complete 84 60 for 800 bucks. And am taking the power steering off and installing it on my 1965 right now. (I am parting out the 60 and already made all my money back + some.
Granted mine is a little different because I had column shift. But you get the idea.
Dad2six, what did you do about your shock tower on the DS? I'd like to do the 80 PS on my '77 40 but I'm not liking having to cut into it.

Saginaw. I have had very good results from the '80 pump.

Yes, the whole setup. The mounts that we have used are functionally the same, some have unused tabs, etc, but :meh:.

The tower is in the way, the choices are; cut it or replace it, F150, hoop, etc, or go with a different steering setup, mini truck, etc.

If you want to keep the stock tower, there is no way around it. Otherwise it is common, and quite easy, to switch to Ford shock towers.

Hello Guys,
I have a BJ40. I am thinking of mounting a 70series power steering set onto it. Any suggestions ? please advise. thank you !

What year BJ40?
Hello all. I know this is an old post but I’m hoping to revive it. I’ve got a 83 BJ42 and I’m thinking of upgrading the power steering setup. I don’t like all the play in the stock setup. Yes I have replaced all the ball joints, trailing arm joint, adjusted the play on the box itself and rebuilt the Center link. I have an old BJ 60 steering box. But I’m not sure if that would fit with the second battery stand. And I’m not all that keen on chopping up the shock tower mounts either. It would seem like a Saginaw box would be my best option? I just don’t wanna go through all this trouble and find out that it’s not much different than the stock power steering set up. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone with mini truck PS running 35's?

Just curious for some added feedback... as I have 33's and mini PS now
Im also running 33”s and the mini ps box. Even at that size tire I regret not going another way and will eventually change it. No way would I go 35”s.

Tire size amplifies the mini box being iffy, but the bigger issue is it also keeps all the indirectness and extra pivots and wear points in the linkage.

Mini box is easy, but that’s about all it has going for it.

Edit - missed the age of post I quoted and most recent post. Sorry not more relevant response!

FJ80 box for the win, powerful, tight, good assist, still feels like a Cruiser, doesn't feel too numb like a Saginaw.

so is it pretty safe to say that if you want 35 s or larger one should go with Saginaw setup?

Thanks.

Correct.

Or lockers.

I have Saginaw. I think i need to overdrive the pump. At idle it would be nice to have more assistance than I currently have. Raising rpm just a little bit helps immensely.

(Edit) - just realized I responded to a very old post
