210 isn't terrible. Sounds like it just has air in it. Go drive it

Bad/Incorrect/Upside down Thermostat?
Thermostat is brand new, and only fits in one direction. I may just need to burp the coolant system more effectively.

ok so I ran more tests.

I stuck a funnel in it and burped as much air as possible. I got some huge bubbles and added maybe half a quart of coolant.

Engine temp still climbed easily to 200F at idle.

Here’s what’s odd:
I could easily put my finger in the coolant in the funnel…. It was only warm. Not hot.

Next, I could easily lay my hand on top of the radiator.

The block was hot. I could only touch it for a second.

Thoughts?

Go drive it and get the air worked out.

Pulled the thermostat.

Brand new Toyota part.

No change between room temp and boiling water.

Deleted thermostat. Temp and oil pressure are now DIALED.

New operating temp is 140F, climbs to 170F under prolonged load

wow. that is definitely a rare one

She made it.

I got it done the night before my trip at 3am. I built drawers and a sleeping deck and ran it “rustic” compared to my 60.

8 days in the Oregon Cascades. No major problems.

I always thought I just had that kind of luck. I had a teq one fail to open when @mattressking and I fired up my rebuilt 2F. Scary. But easy fix and no harm done.

I am stoked to read back through this! You got so much done during that couple of weeks. Animal.

How’s she been running?
Runs very well! Tons of power. Amazing power steering. Brakes suck for some reason. Im unsure why but it takes a lot of pedal pressure to activate the brakes well. It also has a few other gremlins that need to be sorted but it drives very well and VERY fast.

I can't recall if this has a LSPV like the 62s and early 80s? Maybe that is causing pressure issues?

How are you making vacuum for the power brake booster?

Im using an alternator that has an integrated vacuum pump, just like the original 12HT. Whats interesting is that my FJ60 has a 12HT, and the brakes are amazing.

Brake setup: FJ80 booster, FJ80 Master Cyl, 4 runner calipers, FJ60 rear wheel cylinders/shoes.

I cloned that identical setup in my FJ40. The only difference is that the vacuum is coming form an Izuzu 12V alternator and not the original Toyota 24V alternator like my FJ60.

My current theory is that either the FJ40 pedal assembly doesnt have enough travel/throw to fully bleed the brakes OR the vacuum pumps aren't equal. The strange thing is that when I first finished the truck and took it for its first drive, the brakes performed very well. It stopped like a beast. Just like my FJ60. But after about two hours of driving the brakes degraded and never recovered. I have no leaks because Im losing no fluid. The vacuum pump on the alternator sounds a bit strange? Maybe it wasnt oiled from the factory? The alternator has a pressurized oil feed line from the engine that I tested and its working.

Thoughts?

I will have one more video for the series to put up. Its massively delayed and I basically stopped filming in the last two weeks, but it should be a pretty good one.

Do you have a vacuum gauge and compare the 60 to izuzu pump?

Yrs ago b4 longfields, I swap a narrowed dana 44 in the front. It had bigger calipers than the 40. The stk disc brake master was a 7/8" diameter and didn't push enuff fluid. I had a low pedal and could pump the pedal for more height, so swapped in a drum brake 1" diameter master. I say this cause, if you have a decent pedal, it's probably not the master. Maybe leverage, but I doubt it. The power booster should be enuff assistance.

Good thoughts. Im going to throw a vacuum gauge on my FJ60 and compare it to the 40. Appreciate the thoughts.
