Hello,
Went to Hollister SVRA today, wanted to hit a few mud boggs! Did the dry thing, wanted to do the wet thing, traction was perfect! Mud holes were muddy, what more could you ask for? here are a couple of flicks:

I also had the new lowrance 540C Baja installed, still waiting for the mapping software then I will have TOPOs and all the trick stuff for the unit. This GPS is very sophisticated/capable and just the ticket for off road exploring!

Hello,
I just returned from Honolulu, a friend of mine sent me an e-mail with a link Vancouver craigslist. It was for a BJ60 parts for sale, specifically a H55 trans. Called him and made a deal, hopped a flight to HNL and hooked up with the seller(Matt). He told me he was going to have to scrap the truck(Leroy) due to a spun main bearing(and a pretty impressive collection of rust) I got the tranny dropped the next day and all the parts packed onto a pallet and over to the freight forwarder. He let me pull all the misc parts I wanted, I got the front driveshaft, alternator, starter, EDIC motor, relays, powersteering pump. I also got the crossmember and lots of hardware. The parts are going to be on a slow boat from Hawaii. I will post a flick of the treasure when it arrives!

Hey,
I got a full float rear end from Cruiserpartsnet, price was very competitive. Here is a flick:

I fabbed a mount to get the Lowrance 540C mounted in a good viewing area, sucker is big an location is an issue, if mounted too high a good chunk ov fwd visibility is lost. Here is my version:

If you look closely on one of the flicks, you can see the cabling running in front of the defroster vent. I used a couple of 1/2" wiring clamps to secure it in place. I have used the unit off road and can say it is more stable than I am!

Hello,
Latest install was the full floating axle rear end. Swiped the rear diff from the BJ42, stuck the Detroit into that. Was kinda fun, set it up like the FSM said, couldnt find red lead, so I used Prussian Blue for the tooth contact pattern. Took about 2 hours, checking and rotating and checking some more. Went out for a drive, kinda wild, when you add power sucker wants to go straight, gonna have to drive it a bunch to get the feel for the locker in the rear.

Hello,
Wanted to try the Detroit out, took it up into the hills, went off the side of the road and tried to climb a bank I normally couldn't get 1/2 way up. I was over the top and exactly where I did not want to be, s***! Detroit lockers rule!

Bumper build

Hello,
Here is a short review of my bumper build. All materials were .250 thickness, with the exception of the winch mounting tabs, they are .500 angle iron. All welding was done with a Miller 175 MIG using 25%argon/75% CO2. Most of the cutting was with a Thermal Dynamics Plasma cutter.

I cut a wedge of steel out of the ends and beveled the edges, then rewelded with the MIG.

P.S. Heres a snapper of the engine!

Did you have any trouble with drilling the engine and transfer mounts into the frame? From the photos it looks like there was always a bit a frame there ready to be drilled into, but talking to my mechanic he thought that because of some of the bigger access holes that some plate would need to be welded in first.

I haven't got a friendly welder at the moment, and I'm wondering if I need to find one or if bolting them in sill suffice.

I have a 78FJ40, so the frame is the same (unless something is different in Aussie land.)

Cheers,
Hamish

Hello,
If you look closely, you should not that the mounts bolt through solid metal, and the clamping plate bear on solid sections of the frame. The method I used is working well and is solid as a rock. If your mechanic uses my measurements I will bet you will have the same luck as I had.
Good luck!

Hello,
I started my power steering mod, some might have notices another post where I was asking about the pressure vs return port. I got some great replies, went out and actually measured the ports. The pressure port is 1MM smaller than the return port. I will post some flicks following the install/mod:

Power steering pump is from a stock 3B, I will have a new pressure line made at the local hose shop, will post some flicks after the hose is made.

Hello,
I went to the hose shop, seems the shop did not have the necessary metric hose ends. The hose guy suggested that I solder/braze some JIC male ends to the original hose ends, I did have to turn the ID of the JIC male end to fit the 10MM hard line .Total cost about $4.00 plus the cost of the new JIC hose. Here is a flick of the metric hose ends with the brazed JIC male fittings:

what kind of oil filter did you use. and did you use the water fuel seperater? any info would be nice i am doing the swap myself but dont have the bj wiring harness

Hey,
I decided to get busy finishing the P/S. Got the wrenches out, spun uo the die grinder and got 'er done. The new triple pass radiator was installed and all the bits and chunks I had been collecting went into the Mutant.
DSCN7596.jpg

The triple pass radiator had the outlet on the opposite side of the radiator, the nifty OEM hose connector and a NAPA generic radiator hose made the crossover nicely. I did have to trim about 1.5" from the end of the fan shroud to clear the P/S pulley.

DSCN7598.jpg

The junk installed, started it up, ran the steering back and forth to bleed the lines took awhile till the foamy P/S fluid stopped foaming and turned clear. Dug a nice hole with the 33"s. Happy now!

P.S. I need a P/S pulley from a 3B. Anyone? PM me with a price if ya got one.

Hello,
I got the tensioner from exmodified as a component of a power steering setup from a BJ60. As far as I can tell 3Bs are the only unit that uses that pulley assy. Check specter for the various diesel engine applications.
