i could be wrong but decades ago i bought a pig, i was shur (hillbilly talk intentional) it was a hand crank up and down. maybe just Canucks got the hand crank option ... then again i could be dreaming in my old age.

Inside or out?

It appears (by web pics) that it'd be easy enough to do, but would have to crawl in back, roll down, to open tailgate.

Just curious. Think mine's the gear. Tearing into next week, I hope.

Chris-- IIRC, you don't need the long body ASCO's as they were only for a short period of time in 1978-1979 (IIRC).

One of the main reasons people want the long body ASCO's is that they are a direct fit for 4/1994 and later 80 series rigs that have gone part time.

Get the period specific ASCO's which will, IIRC, be short bodied.

Is there any reason for long bodied if swapping to 60 knuckle?

Honestly don't know where I got it stuck in my head that the long bodied were required. No mention of long hubs in any emails with Georg.

Good news though, cause they ain't easy to find!!

if i remember correctly, the handle sat flush with the trim on the outside.
you pulled it out 180 degrees and started cranking.
folded it back in when done.

Nope - '76-'79 pigs all got the long bodied ASCO from Mr T. That's where the 40 folks get them ;)

I was close!! Hey I don't have my cheat sheet in front of me.... Thanks for the clarification though.

I'm kinda thinking about other things right now.

Just hope it's not the dude in the pic. Hahaha.

And your moving to where in the US?

You sure?

According to a few communiqué, may have located a pair of long bodied Asco's, the last being "call, please", but it's Sunday and hate to disturb whomever.

Tucker,
What's the reason the 40s benefit from?

The ASCOs are stronger than the Warns that most 40s had dealer installed, since it's a bolt on swap (as opposed to swapping birfs to use short bodied) folks are always wanting them. Having said that, I would do a Mini/60 disk swap in your case and go with short bodies. That way you'll get the large pattern knuckles too, and much easier to find (but still stock).

Beno,

Hope you steered clear of all that protest mess once it got nasty ;-)

this...if you're not set up with long bodied stuff already- don't bother unless you're going for a full correct resto. the short bodied gear is everywhere, swaps with minitruck stuff, and it doesn't stick out as far into the rocks

So the long bodied 40s are mostly Warn's, where as the 76-78 long bodied 55s are Asco/Aisin (seller claimed the long bodied he had were Aisin. Know same thing, but....)

Got it.

Had partially planned with Georg, all but the hubs, so will be on the hunt for the easier to find short bodied Asco/Aisin.

Is one more correct for the model year Pig?

Don't know why that matters, considering I'm swapping most the rest to 60 anyway, but.....

So a few other questions...

This is what's planned from Georg:

60 Knuckles
60 Knuckle kit with OE bearings and deals
OE wheel bearings
OE brake line backing plate
60 TREs
Custom tie rod and drag link to accept 60 TREs and eliminate the reducers, in preparation for power steering (undetermined, but Georg suggested IPOR's bracket)

What I'd planned source from Dan:

OE 60 Rotors
OE 60 Calipers, new or remans, whichever.
OE 60 pads
OE axle to caliper brake lines
OE frame to axle brake lines

Undecided if hard lines will/need to be redone, but guessing that'll depend on teardown.

Now, the questions, concerning braking.

Believe Pighead and Jim C. Both suggested mini calipers, mini booster and master cylinder, versus 60 caliper and/or 60 or 55 OE master and booster.

Know all are a direct fit, but trying to understand the benefit from their suggestions, without assuming.

Anyone know?

Know there, but I couldn't tell what side of the line you were on, considering the reason for your return to, in the first place.
