I just about spewed my beverage all over the place. “Better looking”???? There is no way I would be caught dead in any of the Lexus cars post 100 series. They are all hideous Japanamation things. I like cars and trucks to look like vehicles, not Cylon invasion fleet vehicles.
The Japanese design gurus do not have the vision of the rest of the world. Always weirdly edgy, particularly the Lexus grilles....

When Lexus put the spindle grille on the RX350, I confidently predicted that it would be a disaster for the brand. My reasoning was that the RX is Lexus’s bread and butter model and it appeals to an older, conservative group of buyers who would be put off by that hideous grille. How was my prediction? RX sales in the US increased.

That shows just how much I know about auto marketing…

I think the LC 500 is beautiful

Also the LX 570 (1st facelift 2012/13 - 2015)
Looks better than any 4 eyed 100 series LX and has a very handsome face actually where the spindle grille was at its infancy.

LX 570 black edition looks good too

Lx 600 with the f sport grille/blacked our grille in certain colors.

It's pretty toned down in the GX 550 vs LX. Could have been way worse.

They are toning it down now.

All they did was cover up part of the six porterhouse grill. And when you try to cover something up, to hide it, you wind up drawing attention to it and it stands out more. They should have cut bait on that front end entirely.

That will probably happen in the update.
Maybe not entirely but i can predict the fangs probably might go.

Personally I dont think the grille on the GX is bad. I think it works well on it.

The TX is way toned down. When I saw one in traffic a few weeks ago - I didn't recognize it as a Lexus right away. The other models are unmistakably Lexus. TX is generic SUV. It looks good. But not signature Lexus at all.

I think the TX design was frozen after the GX.
Another thing is now they are trying to go with a new approach, give every model a different variation of the spindle.

I think the grille on the GX 460 is horrid. The grille on the GX 550 is fine.

As a mechanical engineer, I can confidently say that unless you're designing, testing, and building very similar vehicles/working on very similar projects, there is little you can say that's of any value over anyone else, degreed or not. My degree and 15 years of industry experience has given me no special insight into this vehicle's design or reliability. Yee old arguments from authority.

And time is already telling...

There are documented failures on Sequoias but the recall doesn't include hybrid motors?

Should have just stuck with what works. Not saving the planet when ypur engine won't even make it to a 5 digit mileage.

Any comment on the rapid engine failures?

Sounds like a s***ty situation for Toyota and the customers who are affected. Debris from machining isn't something a mechanical engineer on the Internet could have predicted from a design standpoint so no I have no specific insight into that problem.

You forgot the golden rule of LEAN, Genchi Genbutsu, or "go and see". I'm not concerned so much with the root cause of the failure, only that the failure is occurring. Watch the videos, it's not a debris issue, it's a design problem.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it." Or maybe it should be "If it isn't broke, let's scrap it and redesign it so it does break".

Time will tell. At this point all I can say for certian is that the track record of this new engine family is permanently stained. That, and more complication invites more problems. 😁

I think the reason is that the hybrid doesn't lose power in the same way, so it won't leave you stranded in the middle of a lane of travel - you'll at least get to the shoulder. I'm not sure the recall has anything to do with customer satisfaction or meeting customer expected service life.

1. How do you know what I know or have forgotten?

2. The root cause of a failure is the most important thing to understand in order to fix and prevent it from continuing to happen. You're bringing up lean, not understanding the root cause of a failure is in direct contradiction to lean.

3. Read the statement released from Toyota. "There is a possibility that certain machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine when it was produced. In the involved vehicles, this can lead to potential engine knocking, engine rough running, engine no start and/or a loss of motive power. "

4. If you're referring to some other problem, my point is there is a probability approaching zero that someone, even a mechanical engineer, looking at limited design specs and/or pictures on the internet could accurately predict failure occurring. They could guess, and be right, but anyone can do that.

5. A large portion of this board don't seem to understand that Toyota isn't changing their engine designs because they are bored, enjoy unnecessary complexity, or are too stupid to figure out how to design large displacement more powerful engines. They are forced into this by government policies that plenty of people here actually support, indirectly vote for, or are completely ignorant about.

These excessively complicated IC engines are slated for extinction in California anyway. California DID pass a law that by 2035, new vehicles with IC engines can not be sold in the state.

Everything is slated for extinction.

But first there has to be a practical, workable and cost effective replacement. There is not one today nor is there one on the horizon.

Very few people can afford a Tesla. It's a top 1% car for elites. That leaves 99% of us to reform laws and recall politicians. That is what we are doing in the EU. You might want to start soon here.
Teslas are pretty cheap to buy. A new Tesla Model 3 in California is as cheap as $25,240 after tax rebates. It's not free. But it's cheaper than almost every ICE car you can buy. I think we're going to buy a Model Y to replace our RX350 in the next year or two. The model Y is cheaper than a similar Rav4.
