UPDATE: 04/06/2017

I am moving ahead with option 1. I've made considerable progress on the hardware and software design and should have prototype hardware within next few weeks. Feature set looks like this:

  • Clock w/ Date (12 or 24 Hour Time)
  • 3 Temperature Inputs (Compatible with ALL VDO Sensors), F or C
  • 4 Digit LED Display, the actual readout will be slightly larger than OEM, color will be pretty close.
  • Full support for factory dimming + ability to override brightness (dimmer or brighter)
  • Altitude, Compass and Inclinometer (opt)
At this point, it looks like the final product will be a fully populated PCB with all components. You'll simply remove clock from dashboard, open case, unscrew factory PCB, screw in new PCB and then you'll have to dremel out the back of the case for the temp sensor connections. I'll provide detailed instructions, but if you don't want to mess with openingI'll likely offer whole units with a core charge as well.

So that's the good news, the bad news is that after receiving a clock from the pre-facelift dashboard and taking it apart, it turns out that they are completely different internally and at least for the first production run, I'm only going to be offering units for 80 series with the newer dashboard. Sorry guys. I thought they would be similar even though they looked different but it's completely different and on the older design there is even less room for components, and it's very tight to begin with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the things I've noticed that's missing from the 80 is an outside air temperature guage, I've researched a bit and I'm not crazy about any of the options being a stickler for OEM look for things like that, I've been toying with a couple ideas....

1) A replacement for the factory clock, which in addition to working as the factory clock, you would be able to hookup, let's say 2 temperature leads to and then you'd be able to use the button to select what to display and maybe there would be a scan mode or something. This would reuse the actual clock display and buttons so it will look EXACTLY as the OEM module does, I would just be replacing the electronic guts. Because the clock module is such a small area, I think it would have to reuse the existing clock display so it would be pretty basic from a user interface standpoint (as there are only 3.5 digits). I am guessing that this would be $100 or so + your clock module. It would plug in to factory harness and then you'd have to run your temp sensors to wherever you want them to go.

2) A larger display that would include a custom bezel that would fit where the 'pocket' is above the radio. This could be a larger display with a couple lines. I think to keep the costs inline it would be a backlit LCD (like the radio display) but it would be a dot matrix with a couple of buttons (kind of like Scan Gauge 2), but would fit properly in the pocket. This could display voltage, have a couple leads for temp sensors, maybe some other features if folks want, this would look a little nicer, but I think this would be a bit pricier, let's say $200-250.

Any interest? Things you'd like to see? Option 1 or Option 2? Good idea? Bad idea?

Option 1 would be great. My head unit already has the clock display so kinda pointless having 2.

Option 1 would be killer. And it would likely work for the 91-94 dash, as well, right?

Edit to add: I would definitely pay $100 for something like Option 1 as long as quality/operation were on par with what Mudders expect and it was a moderately complete kit. I've been trying to find a good quality indoor/outdoor temp display with sensors to put in my '92 and haven't had much luck.

It would still work as a clock but I would set it up so it would remember what you had it set up to display and default to that.

#1 would be very cool especially if it could toggle between ambient and coolant temp

Yeah. You could use the buttons to switch between or it could automatically toggle.

I'd like option 2 but with a display for a backup camera. I don't need a clock and I want to replace my stereo with a single DIN unit.

Interesting. Hadn't really thought of a din height unit, this would allow a lot of space for a nix display.

Yeah, I suspect it's the same display module even though the early dash has a slightly different form factor. I should be able to build something thats good for both.

Something like this? Combo temp gauge, 12v gauge, and clock. I did the mod a month or so ago...looks factory, but takes some fab and electronics skills to pull-off. I am fine with degrees C, and still looking for an F version to swap out at some point.

External Temp Gauge Mod

Nice. I be interested in this.

Well, the gauge came from Amazon plus I purchased an extended sensor cable.

Parts cost was under $20, but the labor was at least a few hours. I did not document much...but basically removed the clock from the dash, gutted it completely, ground enough of the case with a Dremel for the gauge to fit, adjusted the buttons from the clock to work with the gauge buttons, de-soldered the original temp sensor, soldered the new sensor, ran the sensor wire to just behind the bumper, added additional "smoke" plexiglas as the gauge was too bright, and finally wired it to the OE harness (only on when ACC or ON). So, it is doable, but not something that I will be selling LOL.

I'd be game for option 1. I like the altimeter idea from @1973Guppie . Perhaps a compass too? Just thoughts. I'd be happy with the temperature at least.

Well, especially since Gentex blocks are available from some MUD supplier. :)

But, I like the clock idea. Its really wasted space. There is a clock on the radio and there is a clock on my iphone that clips onto the dash. The truck's clock is a relic.

love my gentex mirror, thus why I suggested an altimeter to go in that place, it just seems like a good place for it

It will be a challenge to reuse the OEM display. It's a vacuum fluorescent display driven by a proprietary IC with integrated clock function, so difficult/impossible to tap into the display for other purposes. I wanted to just increase the filament voltage on mine to counteract the reduction of phosphor efficiency and resultant dimming over time and gave up even trying to do something as simple as that.
