Got about 85% of the exhaust done today. Really glad I went for it myself, only spent about $220 and I’m really pleased with how it looks. Will get the muffler and tailpipe on tomorrow. Also need to fine tune my hanger and possibly add another one.

Took some videos. It’s really hard to get a concept of the sound when it’s in a garage up pretty close to the wall.

It goes! Can’t believe it! It sounds great, but it’s also LOUD. Probably going to have to throw a more muffling muffler on it.

Can’t believe how much stronger it feels than the 2F. The numbers truly don’t tell the story. I can’t believe how similar in sound and feel it is to my old p-pump Cummins 12V.

Just a couple of laps around the block so far, and needed to tighten the belt for the alt. The power steering works a treat. Driving position still really sucks, and the brakes are very spongy, but I’ve got a fix for that coming up with @cruisermatt s tundra kit and all new booster and master.

Edit: I pulled the 2F on January 21st. Can’t believe I knocked this driving less than 2 months later.

Drive around for 30mins or so and all is good! Temps are good, oil pressure is good. Shifting is good, though clutch is all the way at the top of the pedal. Probably really needs that new master coming tomorrow.

I truly can’t believe the power. It’s accelerates UPHILL! I would almost call it quick.

I put a little vacuum gauge on my booster reservoir and it’s only showing about 7inhg at idle. Hmm. Maybe that’s ok at the canister.

It’s amazing how much you can get done with a little bit every day!

Hello,

It is coming along nicely.

Are you considering an air filter housing?

Just curious.

Juan
Maybe someday, but it’s pretty far down the list. A lot would have to be moved around on the passenger side to make it fit there. I did find one that reused a 2F style that looks nice, but again, probably a lot of work for looks,

Little update- put some real hose clamps on the vacuum lines to and from the canister/res and the indicated vacuum doubled at idle to 14 in hg. I pinched the line with my finger going to the brake booster and the vacuum started to creep up, so I'm guessing the booster is probably leaking a little.

I've also noticed that when warm, and the cold temp idle up is not engaged, the idle has a good vibration to it. I wouldn't say the engine sounds rough or like it's missing, but it shakes the whole truck pretty good. Also, when I abruptly take my foot off the gas to brake, it shudders pretty good. So I'm feeling pretty strongly that the injectors could use a rebuild. I tried pulling the main filter and filling it with Luqimoly Diesel purge, and im sure this will surprise absolutely nobody, but it made zero difference....

Will probably wait till later this week when my 40 is back to tear it apart for injectors. I'm guessing that sitting for a long time either in Japan or Dubai or wherever it really came from, the injectors got a little rusty. Question is, do I bite the bullet and send the injectors from my spare motor in for a rebuild as well...?

Been driving the troopy everyday to get my boys from school. Wow. I’m in love with this motor. Even being a bit unbalanced at idle, it’s just so sweet. The power is so good. As far as I know it’s bone stock fueling and turbo and it just goes and goes. The comparison to my 2F and 1F is just really night and day. I’m sure with fresh injectors it’ll be even sweeter.

I’m really thinking down the line that a 10% overdrive in high range would really be the perfect combo. This transmission is really smooth, and the 3.73 with 33s is pretty nicely matched, but about 150-250 more rpm in every gear I think would just be perfect.

Brake feel has definitely improved since adding real hose clamps to my vacuum lines, but it’s still inconsistent and feels the same as it did with the 2F. They work ok, but I’m really looking forward to some more braking power!

Same goes for the suspension. The old leafs are worn out and my shocks are just smoked.

We’ll see how work goes the next two weeks but might get another wrenching window at the beginning of April.

Little more progress today- got the clutch master installed and bled. Engagement definitely feels better and an inch or two lower in the pedal travel. Now it’s all new hydraulics, so should last me forever.

Got my new hubs setup with new races, wheels studs, and hub studs installed. Should get a break at work to get phase two done this week- new brakes upfront! Very much looking forward to more powerful brakes and more consistent.

Tried the zerk removal trick on my front driveshaft and it still won’t fit. It’s just too long. I’m actually thinking my rear is a bit too short, it seems pretty extended to me?

Was able to get a nice little cruise in tonight with the boys too. 75 in March. Yikes.

Good news and bad news today-

Good- injectors are out and they don’t look too bad. They crusty and rusty, which is expected, but the tips all look about the same and nothing looks burned or broken. They all look about the same, which I view as good sign. I’m guessing inside looks similar to outside and they’re pretty sticky. Would explain the idle shake, and that a couple of them didn’t make much difference to rpm when I cracked the lines to bleed the air. They’re off to Central Plains Diesel in Kansas for a rebuild and probably new nozzles.

Bad- man there’s a lot of oil in the outlet of my turbo. The intake pipe where the crank vents into is pretty dry, which to me indicates that it’s not cause by blow-by. But I wasn’t planning on any turbo changes yet!

My compression test adapter will definitely work, with an adapter rigged up for the hold down studs. Hopefully that will confirm good rings.

Now the question is- stock rebuilt turbo, or for about the same price, upgrade. Drift motion does an upgraded rebuild for like $600 and they have a great reputation. I know gturbos are the bomb, but damn they’re hard to justify price wise if you aren’t also doing nozzles, pump upgrades and intercooler…

Also bad was I had to get my driveshafts retubed again. Somehow the transfer case moved forward a little over two inches with the engine change.

Thinking more about my turbo last night. When I check the oil in my sump with the dipstick, it’s still very fresh looking. It’s curious to me that this oil in the outlet side is so black. Maybe it’s a red herring.

There was definitely quite a bit of new oil on my grid heater as well, so it’s slinging it out for sure. This was clean and dry before I started.

Unsure what to do. Sounds like I can replace a seal, but a full rebuild is not recommended as a diy job.

Some progress today and a self inflicted screw up. Got one side of the @cruisermatt tundra brake mostly installed. Took a few attempts on the sequence, and then a temporary lapse in my ability to read “passenger side”. But it fits and my 16in nomad wheels clear nicely. I got the new hubs all setup last weekend and not Thinking to check, drove in all six hub studs. My hubs only take two, so not sure my next move here. Getting the unneeded ones back out is going to suck…

Buy a dowel pin puller! A decent one is not expensive on Amazon

@Kmehr did you contact @cruisermatt directly? I looked at his website and didn't see the Tundra brake upgrade.
