Yeah, it stinks but personal family matters have now taken priority.
Ya'll have a safe and wonderful time.
If anyone needs any equipment I have I'm more than willing to share.
Let me know.
Again, my regrets.
:(

Awesome, thanks Troll. Where did you pull that from? The best part about the forecast right now - DRY!!! :D

The forecast I used last time currently predicts these conditions:

Fri
Mar 17 AM Clouds / PM Sun
56°/22° 20%

Sat
Mar 18 Mostly Sunny
51°/21° 20%

Sun
Mar 19 Mostly Sunny
48°/25° 20%

As I found out last time, it's tough to get an accurate estimate of the weather at the 1st night's camp. It's close to 6,000 feet on top of the balds and the winds can rip!! Last time we camped, the forecast called for a low in the mid 20's. It was in the high teens when we went to bed with gusts probably in the 15-20mph range. Basically, down right frigid. Everything was frozen when we woke up.

The second night's camp is more moderate because we'll be at a lower elevation with less wind and more cover from vegetation.

I am sure our meteorologist in training, Mr. Virgo, will chime in soon. We usually have some nice meteorological and geological debates as the adult beverages get consumed around the fire!! ;)

 Meteorologist in training beat me to the response!!! :grinpimp:

before I found out about landcruisers I spent all day looking at weather sites....... now mud has replaced that :grinpimp:

also if you ever want a accurate forecast for the higher terrain 5000+ this guys forecast is the best, he is a meterologist at App. State ....... the problem with the weather channel and most other weather services is that they give forecast for the valleys or a general area not the the 6000ft bald we will be camping on :D

http://averyweather.com/beechmountain/forecast.php

this forecast is for beach mtn. although futher north it is fairly close in elevation at 5200ft, so this is a good bet for what we will see friday night

Virgo will be above the moon the whole night of the 17th & 18th. Interesting he is not wearing any shoes either.:flipoff2:

now I know where I get that trait from!!! :flipoff2: seriously though, I imagine the stars will be amazing up there, last time they were, it is amazing what less light polution in the sky can do....... I actually saw shooting stars for the first time in a while

And it was snowing with crystal clear skies the first night... Wasn't it?? :grinpimp:

Well the moon will be comming out around 10 so don't expect to see a ton of stars but it might be pretty good over on the west side. until 12 or 1. Too bad the space station isn't flying over ya'll those two nights.. That is a cool thing to experience.

safety gear

While I'm unable to attend I thought I'd offer some safety gear
for loan. I was thinking that my First Aide kit would be nice for
ya'll to have, some large wheel chocks and a come-a-long might be handy too.
I also have several straps, a long Warn chain, two d-rings for attachments
heavy gloves, a tree saver, high lift jack and long handle shovel. Also I have a handheld CB and two fm radios.
Let me know if ya'll wish to borrow these or if ya'll can think of something
you need. I have some seasoned firewood and fire starters too.
I'd like to contirbute to this trip if ya'll need any of this stuff.
I have TONS of camping gear. Lemme know your needs, if any, and I'll
try to fill the bill.

well I just down loaded about 100+ BlueGrass songs, I am pumped up for this trip!!!!

It now looks like I will be going up thrusday night to do some exploring Friday before everyone else arrives, so PLEASE POST what group you intend to ride up with friday the 3pm or 7pm, so I know who to expect :D You must ride with one of these two groups, because trust me you won't be able to find this place on your own. If you can't make the appointed meeting times just PM me and we will work something out.

Can't wait to see everyone there

JP
