Exhaust question / muffler delete or Flowmaster

Here is a roll on from about 53ish to roughly 70 with the windows up.



I think for this muffler installed which takes about 10 minutes I paid 145. It has been on for almost two years. Hoping to start on my rear bumper and swing out next week so the factory resonator will be going good buy. I have regularly hauled 2-4K lbs of gravel and firewood on my car trailer and moved halfway across the county pulling a moving trailer with it and have not had any issues with droning on the highway.

Here is a picture of it installed in place of the factory muffler.

Just thought I would throw out another option and some experiences I've had.

To clarify... I deleted, from the tail pipe moving towards the front, the first "canister" located above the rear axle. Call it what you want....

The "canister" you're referring to is the resonator. The actual muffler is located further up towards the middle of the truck and is oval shaped when viewed length-wise.

I replaced the OEM muffler with a Flowmaster (also removed the resonator) and while it had a nice growl/rumble to it, it also droned while cruising at around 2500 RPM, which was mildly annoying. I then replaced the Flowmaster with a Walker muffler and it's perfect to me. It's got the nice growl at startup and decent rumble at throttle. No more drone either. My application includes K&N FIPK and DT headers.

Which magnaflow did you install.

Which Flowmaster did you have? Was it a single in and out? 1 2 or 3 chamber. There are many options with each manufacturer and it would great to narrow it down.

I recorded a quick sound bite at startup but the quality was terrible and probably wouldn't contribute much.

It was about 4 years ago and I don't remember which Flowmaster they installed. It was single in and out, but I don't recall the number of chambers.

It's official, I'm old. Took my 100 back to the shop today and had my stock muffler put back on. Not just because I was over the sound but I know I lost power after deleting the muffler. Someone said something about the 4.7 needing the back pressure of the muffler, I believe it's true. The guys at the shop were laughing when I walked in, asked if I was ready for my stock muffler to go back on.............yeap. Oh well, it was fun for a couple weeks but nothing like a quite ride.

I wish you could still get the old style glass paks like Walker Blue Swingers. They had the nicest mellow burble to them until you dipped into the throttle and then they snapped like you wanted them to. Mmmman....makes me think of the old 69 Plymouth... lol

Magnaflow 18" with resonator deleted. Been 2 1/2 years now and still love it. Sounds even a little better after installing new cats - vid prior to that. Hard to capture exhaust tone on vid.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever installed a muffler themselves using clamps with or without gaskets or sealer. Not having to pay labor would make replacing a muffler a super cheap mod, but I am not sure about clamps vs. welding.

I have one on my 2010 4.6 V8 Tundra and the resonator delete and it sounds awesome!!! No drone and the perfect growl. I’m usually a Magnaflow guy (on my 300ZX, 3series, 300C HEMI... I’m rocking MF)

Finally got around to putting on a Flowmaster 50. Kept the resonator.

Sounds really good, closest comparison is to the stock exhaust of a 200-Series.

Hey partner, do you know what magnaflow part number your muffler was? I am trying to determine length/width of the one I am going to go with.
