Hey all,

I want to open up a discussion on how to switch the clunky exhaust system for a header. Unfortunately, where we live, there are emission requirements to get tags for the vehicle. The emissions system is complete, but in very poor shape. (the baffle box on the EGR has 4 of the 8 bolts snapped off inside, the main exhaust manifold is cracked, etc..) I have the parts at a machine shop, and they are not optimistic. I intend to keep all the parts, so no offers please.

So, anyone from colorado up on current emissions laws? Or know a good resource for getting info?

The rest...How many of the hundreds of vac hoses go away with a header setup? How is driveability vs stock? How is driveability with a cobbled up original emissions system?

Gosh, scorcher1967, I don't think I've ever seen all the smog stuff on a '78 Pig...must be a lot.
Downey sells a "smog legal" (in Ca, anyway) header that has the EGR take-off, but they say it won't fit a Pig with manual steering. I put one on a 40 once. Driveability with a header is fine. Some say the engine doesn't warm up as quickly, but that does not seem to be a problem here in Sac. I have a fluid heat riser on the bottom of my intake manifold but never bothered to plumb it.
I lost all but two of my vac hoses...one to the dizzy and one to my throttle positioner. Here's a pic of of a de-smogged Pig, aircleaner removed so you can see the vac lines...

Up here in Larimer county, we dont have any emissions testing. That just started this year. :bounce: So I am planning on compolelty desmogging my 76 as soon as I get some $$$ and even more time. Neither of which I seem to have any of.

This one will end up being registered in Larimer county. My concern is that the emissions testing will be back, and dont know if de-smogged vehicles will be "grandfathered", or will have to be put back to original. Probably pure speculation at this point, but I would think that testing will return at some point.

What are the advatages/disadvantages of desmogging an FJ? When I purchased my 55 it had a 2f engine swap. The PO left off the entire emission system and vacuum equipment. All I have on mine is a vacuum hose running to the distributor and another one going to the brake booster. I'm not even sure if they are serving a purpose.

My state inspection (LA) does not require emissions checked on vehicles older than 1985 so that's not a problem for me. Are there any reasons besides inspections that you would want to have all that stuff?

I have the smog legal FJ40 header on my 55. It will not fit with the stock steering, and probably not with mini truck power steering...
It fits great with my FJ60 power steering.

Scorcher,

I have an emssions manual for 1978 2F if you want to make copies of things...

Is the 55 a Fed Spec? H/A? Cali?
dont know the specs...
I have decided to put all the emissions stuff in a box, and put a Man-A-Fre 6to1 header on it. For now, Larimer County wont require emissions, so, keep ahold of that manual for later...and thanks.
