I agree with Bomar, just get an 80 and be done.

2nd Gen suck with the way the rear window and tailgate. Go 3rd Gen all day

I like the 2nd Gen and it may work better for our dog and hauling stuff.

The 3.4 gets better mileage than the 22re

But it trades ALL the cool factor.

I chose 1st gen 4runner to get old school, removable top, simplicity, and decent (20ish) mpg.

I want a reliable weekend family truck that may become an around town commuter for me at some point in the next 3 years.

60, 80s don't get the fuel mileage
2nd and 3rd Gen 4runners lose out on simplicity and old school looks

screw it I'll go buy 4door wrangler

80 with a 4.8/5.3 can see high teens in mpg

so.....to return you to your regularly schedule programming......I am looking for a clean 1st Gen. White, silver, blue.

good to immaculate interior, no shade tree engine swaps, prefer auto. and NO RED interior or huge lifts.

This is a family weekender I want to be reliable and that may see some in town commuting for me within the next 2-3 years.

Did you check on the blue one in the last CL link i posted?

I believe that was the Tulsa one? It had a big lift and the interior was trashed in the pictures he sent.

There was also some kind of skid plate welded under the transfer case.....looked like a redneck mudde/hunting rig.

but thanks for posting up! I can't search craigslist on my gov't machine so I'm limited to cell phone until I get home week after next.

Shush, that black one went for 10 but looking at these others I see why.

I thought it closed on Ebay for $9k even....that nuts!! yes it was way better in all facets than the others currently on EBAY BUT I still wouldn't pay $9 or $10k for it.

Nicely built rig I saw coming out of the store this week.
Inspiration for said buyer

Another vote for a 3rd Gen 4Runner. Get a 96-99 with an e-locker. Bam. Rock out.

Having owned (own) a 1st gen, I could see the appeal wearing off very quickly with a wife. They may look cool to us, but most other people don't understand them from an aesthetics perspective. Or functionality, either.

The other consideration is that the 22RE is gaining in difficulty to repair and find someone to work on. Yes, it's EFI, but it's a fuel injection system that's now almost 30 years old. When I wheeled a 22RE, I could about plan on replacing at least one sensor every year. The trouble came in figuring out which one, as the diagnostics with the EFI is very, very primitive (not in a good way). I do have a stockpile of 22RE parts that I would love to sell you at a ridiculous price because I'm nice like that, but I'm still leaning towards a 3rd gen after considering all of your comments. Instead of finding a unicorn 1st gen, you can find a really nice loaded 3rd gen for same or less money and be able to take it anywhere and someone can work on it (if ever needed). I have a 2001, and they're solid trucks.

But... alas... if we can't persuade you in a different direction, then I'll keep a blind eye peeled for a 1st gen. Just want you to know that after the initial hard-on wears off, there might be some serious bleeding.

I appreciate the input and will absorb it as I shuffle my feet watching ebay, craigslist, etc.

I have a very simple and very good answer to diagnostics and EFI engine work...I just so happen to have ROB WILDER AND 49 TIRUS at my disposal!

Hell that's just down from my office, maybe I'll go look at it tomorrow.

Are you shopping? I talked with him via text yesterday. He was on shift so we couldn't talk. I am calling him this afternoon.

If you go by let me know! He sounds knowledgeable and has had alot of Runners apparently.
