This truck needs a lot of work. He has done the engine swap but it's not complete. Ie a lot of electrical to do. It also has a less than desirable interior: torn seats, no radio, missing dash parts, etc. he seems eager to sell ( mid project) which is an alarm too.
I am looking for the time capsule, turn key rig. Not sure what that translates to money wise but I'd pay $6500 for a nicer truck verse $4k and the truck needing love.
Household 6 has decided she will go for a 5 speed but prefers the lighter colors. I'd prefer an efi 4 speed so with all desires consolidated we are looking for a unicorn.
I'm watching the black 88 on eBay (from WA) it's at $5500. Will be interested to see where it goes.

To clarify: was planning on auto but there are not many so 5 speed is now on the table.
I still want a truck that is stock, clean, and that is being bought as a weekend family truck. IE ill pay more up front for a complete functioning rig over it needing electrical, paint, headgasket etc
What i am describing/ wanting is rare so i am willing to wait on "the one"

I am trying to gauge what the top end on the pristine 1st gens is verse the typical $3k rode hard, lot of miles, decent shape ones

You and I are looking for the same Runner...though I MUST have an auto tranny. (Like you, red interior are a complete NO-GO). You have a solid head-start in that I'd have to sell my 40, or wait a year til my oldest is 16. At any rate, I'll probably have to trade up in the 100 Series department sooner than buying the 1st gen.

The 40s are great, but 2 kids, dog, need to occassionally haul stuff...the 4runner just make sense.
The black 88 I posted above got full wife approval except for the Black. I LOVE the paint but it would be hot as all get out. Silver or white Auto is the best option but blue color and/or standard will work.

Is AC high on your list? It almost seems as hard to find one with AC (especially that works) as it is to find a cherry with an auto tranny. I was used to no AC trucks in Colorado...but I find them all over the country, now.

I live in Mississippi........if I didn't want AC I'd buy a 40. I will GET AC working if it's not. but hopefully the "cherry" 4runner I find will have functioning AC!

Beach unit rented and paid for, family has been planning since JAN...no can do.....HOWEVER. if the right one comes along I would definitely take leave and make a road trip. (I can't see the pics yet but will look at it tonight.)
