I registered with this site just to give you kudos. We have a 2003 Landcruiser and our Rugus Ratus has demolished the speaker cloth on all the speakers with her gymnastics. This post allowed me to do the job myself. Got stuck a little on step 7; have to press in on the clip lower than I expected. Found the exact same beige speaker cloth on the internet and have replaced both rear door and cargo speaker cloth. Fronts are next.

Cheers!

Where did you find the speaker cloth? Give a plug so other Mudders can check it out. Speaker grills are a common complaint.

Thanks for posting - great writeup!

Step 7 tricked me up - you want to be careful b/c if you force it you can bend/break the plastic and if you scrape the front of the piece you can damage the wood easily. Just cosmetic, but be gentle if you don't want to damage it. Also - the FSM points out to cover the tip of your screwdriver with tape to minimize likelihood of damage. Others use a blade to get in there - just careful not to damage the leather/plastic/wood.

Personally, I replaced the grille itself which wasn't as expensive as I feared, but I'm sure just replacing the cloth is waaay cheaper. I'd like to know where i can get replacement cloth as well. For anyone interested in purchasing the grille, here were the part numbers/price for me (at least from lexusparts.com for my lx470 '05 with ivory interior):
1) Front Right: 67609-60020-A2 $35
2) Front Left: 67709-60020-A2 $35
3) Rear Right: 67071-60020-A2 $46
4) Rear Left: 67072-60020-A2 $46

Nice write-up. Thx.

Great write up, used it last night, thanks a bunch.

Excellent write-up, helped me breeze through the process!

A couple of things, for the switch panel make sure you resist the urge to use a screw driver even if its handy, the material the door panel is made out of is extremely easy to leave impressions in if you poke at it or press into it with anything hard enough. I really found this to be the biggest pain since I had come here and gotten the info on the on the door handle surround first (which made that quite simple). It all makes it apparent what a well made and solid part that whole panel is, especially not peeling apart 3 dozen clips which is the cheap way everyone else does it.

Unfortunately, I replaced my ML speakers with some Infinity Primus PR6500cs (Crutchfield called these a "fit" without a bracket but I found that to have a slight asterisk, since I had to drill holes into the old plastic speaker basket since the holes for the new speakers were slightly less diameter than the originals and original screw locations) and while the speakers are fantastic, I now have slight rattles in both doors during bass and loud deep toned dialogue (isn't that the whole reason I ripped out the old ones in the first place? Oh well, it's not nearly as bad :P). So I'll probably have to go back in there and figure out what's causing it. It may be that I didn't re-use the uppermost foam rings that came off the old speakers, but I doubt it.

Either way, this tutorial was fantastic. better than any FSM.

I am at step 11 on my 2000 LX. My door lock bezel is different and is not coming out. There is an earlier post re. a similar issue that mentions engaging some pins. Can anyone clarify?

*real time tech*

Answer for the earlier models: place a flat head screwdriver on top of the lock knob and pry down. Same below handle (pry up). The bezel will pop right out.

I am new to the forum, i would like to add my thanks to you for posting this removal process. I am going to replace my speaker grills while I am in there. I found them pretty inexpensively on line and they look great. the current grills have seen better times.

Thanks again,

JP

11. Carefully pry off the trim piece around the door lock latch handle. I'm not really sure the best way to do that, so the next photos show what the part looks like so you'll know how/where it attaches. I pried it from above and made the round holes disengage from the top of the latch. Likewise, it also has a tab that slides into the front of the latch. Just look at the part, and you can probably figure out how to get it off.

I jumped to step 12, removed that screw, then pulled the whole door panel gently from the bottom and this piece popped out no problem. Just thought I'd share

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to give that method a try, as I ALWAYS seem to have trouble prying that trim piece out! It always feels like it's going to break.......but so far, never has

And a set of these inexpensive trim tools makes this job and many others even easier.
Available from Harbor freight, or where ever fine tools are sold.
