does anyone know how much weight a 100 series roof can handle ?

Will the Yakima and Thule crossbars work with the factory side rails? I have the factory cross bars (which probably aren't strong enough to support a RTT, dynamically or statically) and also the factory side rails. The Yakima website leads me to believe that their crossbars are compatible with factory side rails but with one of their mounts.

Planomateo: thanks for the info on the cross bars. I'm interested in getting a tent but an aftermarket rack is not in the budget at this point, hopefully later.

My 100 series RTT was attached to the factory roof rack for over a year without any issues.

That's... "complicated". You can attach Yak, Thule, etc crossbars to the factory side rails in a pinch, and both websites show the bits and pieces to do it. On the other hand, it wont take more than about 200lbs on a moving truck, which is way less than the Thule or Yakima crossbars can do with the right roof mounts.

AO (African Outfitters?) made a full length extruded rail for the trucks that takes the place of the factory rack and allows Yakima Landing Pads (#1) to bolt up in as many places as you would like. I bought a pair of these rails from Slee when they had them. They still might have a pair or two.

I've put 500-700lbs on top of the poor LX across 4 steel heavy duty crossbars using that config and gone 4-wheeling without a problem (yet).

Obviously the handling dynamics of the truck shift for the worse quickly with that much weight that high up and potentially create significant more roll-over risk.

@LandCruiserPhil rtt probably go perpendicular to the roof rails, it's a smaller tent. The 3 person CVT tent I have covers most of the roof and the mounting rails went parallel to the roof rails. Because of this, they cannot support the load the way they are supposed to. CVT said I needed to mount mine on crossbars.

It all depends on how the mounting rails for the roof top tent line up, each tent is different. More than likely a 4 person tent you're gonna need some good crossbars as they'll need to mount to the crossbars instead of the roof rails.

CVT requires 3 non-factory crossbars to install a 4+ person Mt. Denali tent at their place in Bend. They recommend the same for owner installations.

Mine did have 2 cross bars made out of 7/8" UniStrut setting on the factory rails. It would be no problem to add as many as you want and be fine the the factory rails. In the two pictured I posted above everything is mounted to the exact place the factory roof rack rails bolts to.

You can do the same thing with a pair of FR (Front Runner) rails. Just attach a set of Yakima towers and cross bars and your in business. See below.

Interesting, Im not a physics guru, can you explain how "dynamic weight" comes into play here? BTW Where did you get that number?
The weight limit (200 KG) is what has come up in the past in Toyota Australia literature. It is the same for the 200.

Land CruiserPhil: what type of tent is that in the photo? Also, how did you attached the UniStrut to the factory rails?

Planomateo: I looked up the core bars and timberline mounts you have. From the looks of it the only thing holding the rtt from flying off while moving is the rubber coated stainless steel straps hooking the timberline mounts to the factory rails. That kind of worries me. I just wanted to verify you have not had any issues with your 3 person CVT. Thanks.

My RTT was an Uber rare Mare (100% aluminum and fabric 88lbs) from Venezuela where they understand weather and rain.

No problems, but I don't leave it on all the time.

I didn't see it answered, what if you add more factory cross bars to distribute the weight more?

I ask because I currently have 4 factory cross bars.

Did you ever get an answer to this? Reviving a really old thread but curious as I have additional cross bars as well.

Land Cruisers can hold a lot of weight on the roof if it's well distributed, I wouldn't hesitate to put a 4-man RTT on any model Land Cruiser (100s included). With a good quality roof rack you can probably put more weight on it that would seem reasonable and not suffer structural damage. In a previous life, I used to routinely carry 7 full 5-gallon jerry cans and a 25-HP outboard motor on the roof rack of an FJ62 (plus assorted storage boxes/folding chairs) with no issues whatsoever. You just need to be aware that the vehicle will handle much differently, especially when off camber.
