DIY Land Cruiser Projector Retrofit

I've used the gattling gun shroud in other applications, but I just don't like the look as much with how large the reflector is on the early 100 series. I'm thinking if I could find a shroud that covers more of the low beam reflector, I would like it better.

I might have to try some photoshop to see what I can come up with. I'm not worried about making the shroud fit, I feel confident I could trim anything to make a different one fit.

I agree, will you post if you find a solid alternative?

The end product gatlin + projector looks small and somewhat disproportionate to the overall size of the housing. Still kicks outs stadium lighting with everything opened up, but the look could be improved. I anticipate that you still run into fit issues with the top of the glass lens of the housing, there's just not alot of real estate to be had there.

Major benefit of the Depo is that everything looks very proportionate IMO.

@knewstance - I think the answer is no, and the reason is that the gatling shroud has the smallest diameter out of the shroud options. Or at least it did at the time I did my conversion. They show dimension detail for every shroud, so you can double check that. Even at the smallest diameter, you have to dremel into the top of the stock housing to fit the gatling (sounds intimidating but its really straightforward).

On that note/piece of advice - dremel all the way up to the top of the stock housing. If you don't, you will limit the range of motion that your mounted projectors can be aimed. In my case, I didn't take enough of the housing out, so I can't aim my projectors up as much as I want due to the top of the shroud being blocked by by the bottom of my dremel line. If that makes sense. I can post a picture if it helps explain.

One other thing if I had to do it over again - I would have gone with the higher powered 50W ballasts and bulbs vs. 35W. My concern was heat from the 50W melting the housing (apparently thats a risk). But my 35W setup doesn't run very hot at all, so I think 50W would be fine. Their best sale is end of year, so if you can wait for that you will save yourself a bundle.
is the sale at theretrofitsource?

I followed this (and other threads) for a bit, then finally bought lights from TRS last year - and finally committed to doing it this past week. This only interested me since my driver's side lens was cracked by a rock (i assume) and would get water inside it. Since I'm known to mess things up, I had purchased a spare set of headlights "just in case" anyway - since I needed a new lens.

First time ever doing this sort of stuff, but the OP's directions were spot on. Stupid me didn't aim/level the headlights WITH the surrounding bezel (pre-glass) - so once I assembled the trimmed bezel and glass, the shrouds pushed the beams down too far (like 25" at 10', which seemed low for stock). First time getting the lights apart, I did 250F for 6 mins. This resulted in way too much time prying and swearing (proportionately more swearing). When I had to re-open the lights, I left them in at 215F for 10 mins, and it was significantly easier. Also, just used a drill & sander to make sure i had much more room on the bezel trim (to adjust upwards). Also sanded the lower part of the rear side of the reflector (where the bulb gets inserted), to have the projector already biased "more upwards" instead of straight on.

Long story short, great mod, great light output. Love the dual high beams, may convince the other cruiser in my family that this should be done (and I'll prob have to do it as well).

I'm about to do a D2S retrofit on a set of clear 1 piece Depos for my 05 TLC. The top outlet is for the low beam bulb but what is this bottom outlet in the low beam housing for? Is this outlet used at all in the retrofit or is it covered up by the shroud and needs to be sealed from the back? Thanks!

Have you tried this setup?
I'm almost done with my MICRO D2S 5.0 projector retrofit on my depo glass housings (1999 land cruiser). Yes, that's right I said MICRO D2S 5.0.

My understanding is that this is a new offering from morimoto and I can't wait to have better lighting when driving at night. The micro D2S 5.0 is a hybrid of the D2S 5.0 and mini H1. I've been filming the retrofit and will upload to youtube soon!

Video would be great. Thanks!

Got the majority of the dremeling and mechanical modifications done last night. Just need to seal and align.

I decided on mini H1 but after reading your post, looked up micro D2S and that is what I want now. Thanks for the post. 👍

Yeah I was ready to go with the mini H1 as well since I already acquired the glass DEPO headlights and wanted to make sure everything fit. Luckily before I pulled the trigger they announced the Micro D2S 5.0 and the timing couldn't have been better.

Looking good are you considering a quad set up?
No, I wasn't considering it because I wanted to use the glass housings. I don't know if it would package well in the glass headlights, but I know people make the quad projectors work with the plastic one-piece headlights.

I know there’s not much room in OEM lights but wouldn’t the mini D2S 5.0 fit fine in depo headlights?

It fits man, trimming is needed but its not like H1 didnt need trimming lol

ok, finally had some time to put a video together of the micro D2S 5.0 install in my depo glass housings. Light output...is amazing compared to the HIR bulb modification I had previously. I actually don't mind driving at night anymore. I would say the only other vehicle driving on the road that has "better" lighting than this is a Tesla Model 3.

I'll probably be putting together a follow up video with some tips and tricks and maybe just thoughts on overall effort vs impact.

Would you post links or part numbers to all the parts you used for the retrofit? Thanks!
