Its official!!
When are you starting the teardown?
well, johnny........you tell me! haha
it will be a few weeks before i can get back to the shop to start but i imagine i could have the parts you need pretty quickly...
I can get some measurements of the 4bt and 4L80 together if you want.
You know the story, if you'll be on the highway much you'll want OD with a diesel.

i would think u could make it work... Chicago on here has a 4l60e(IIRC) with 203/split case in his 40...

I read that thread on the 4BT site discouring the 700R4. I was one day away from ordering one from "bowtie" and went back to rethinking what auto to put behind my 4BT. I looked at the 4l80e last spring but if I remeber right its 4 inches longer 100+lbs heavier and woulr require floor sheet metal work.
I have been thinking about an A440F but they appear to have the lenght issue as well plus rebuilds are expensive and follr sheet metal has to be modified
No body seems to comment on this: a 700R4 assembled in a "K" housing with heavy duty parts and diesel govenner ( yes 700R4 has some diesl parts available) and a low stall converter should have no issue if the engine and trans mounts are not to sloppy.. The key here is built for a diesel,
I just wonder about the failures referanced, were they street transmission stuck behing the 4bt? Nobody gives the failure mode just that it broke.. I would like to hear from an owner of a trans that broke behind a diesel
I have delayed starting my mod until december while I sort this out
Pete
maybe i should back up...
i pulled my motor and transmission out for a automatic setup. I sold my nv4500/clutch setup to a fellow cruiser head who put it behind a 4bt in his fj62.
SO...i had to rip every out of the engine bay, feels like im starting over...
thats what i was thinking too. It seems the main issue with the 700r4 is the case strength and getting a proper torque converter and modulator. it also seems the pump on the 700r4 isnt setup for the low rpm diesels, however it seems all these could be taken care of as you are saying...
ive got a 700r4 if you need one. It only has 8,000 miles on rebuild and 800 rpm stall torque converter.
