Dave From Toyota - What We Learned In Breck About The 200...

Ya @TonyP ... Funny you mention that, because yesterday I picked up another code reader...as my truck threw codes again yesterday morning...TEN codes, to be exact! -And all 10 were related to the evap filter reporting a leak. And...I also noticed that my "click" on my gas cap feels iffy at best. I'm betting that's all it is. Interestingly, the codes only seem to register after sitting over-night. So maybe the heating/cooling vacuum/pressure thing is being picked up as a leak...? Gonna order a new cap and see. Meanwhile, clearing the codes is easy, and everything operates as normal afterward...

Yeah, yesterday was when mine popped back up too in the AM. Weird. We're definitely having the same issue whatever it is. The frequency (yours and mine keep popping up at the same time) makes me believe it's a calibration issue/warning type thing. Unless both of our caps s*** the bed at the same time.

Lots of great info. I'm not sure if I know Dave @ Toyota (unless it's Dave Lee) but I've spent time with several other "keys" in the US and Japan Land Cruiser realm including the US market LC lead and Koyorisan, the lead engineer of the Land Cruiser. I've highlighted our round-table in past threads but long story short, the "300" will be quite different than the evolution of LC's we've seen in the US to this date i.e. a sway from the larger displacement. My gut is thinking V6 w/Turbo but who knows. ;)

To say they don't know about the "300" is perhaps a coy maneuver but Toyota is well underway developing the new LC platform and likely has been for 5 years or more. During our 2015 roundtable meeting they were not willing to offer up much in the way of details other than to say the then US EPA mood (which was set to take another strict step) had them reworking the platform. Truth be told the round table was formed to discuss the idea of a 7x in the US or perhaps a spartan model 200. They came to the meeting to discuss the size of headrest monitors and leather packages. I say that in jest but they made no shame in cutting to the chase that the 7x isn't coming to the US anytime soon due to EPA/CAFE complications and an already heavy SUV/truck lineup with amazing sales volume with the Tacoma, why compete against yourself? We discussed a TRD Pro 200, a spartan 200, diesel options lightly, etc. @sleeoffroad, please chime in with your take-aways from the meeting.

Since that time I've spent a bit more time in and around Toyota folks, SEMA, some press events, etc. They know how and why the current 200 sells (and is picking up steam) and I'd expect the "300" to follow that same trend, so yes lots of electronics, assisted driving modes and features and a wolf in sheeps clothing with a price tag to match. I've had some campfire conversations about future rumors but I save those for campfires :D

Looks like I may be in the new cap club also. Same codes came up this morning. 7 total, all evap 0430, 2401, 2402, 2419.
quick check and clear

Seriously? Moab claims another... ...gas cap!!

Makes me wonder if perhaps our older caps were being vacuumed or misshapen and no longer had the plasticity to bounce back after all the high altitude stuff. Like the rubber just had no life left...because I definitely noticed it was going back on weird at the pump...about halfway through the trip. Perhaps ethanol is harder on the seal?? Whatever it was...getting three people with the exact same codes is pretty interesting.

Wild stuff. I'd hold off on buying a new cap. Give me a week to see if it works for my 200 and I'll give the go ahead. No need in wasting $22 on a cap.
Are you going to test that in Moab?

I'm pretty sure I need a new cap anyway...as it doesn't click/lock right now...

I had boiling gas on Top of the World and have the newer gas cap.

Ya, there are videos posted showing gas boiling even with no gas cap.

At this point I'm more interested in whether the error codes related to the evaporator are being triggered by a faulty seal on my cap. My error codes include both a high AND low pressure state...and only on first startup in the morning. Sounds like our caps all stopped clicking shut correctly during the same trip. -At least I know both Tony and mine did...and we are both throwing identical error codes...

Will have to check my cap. Seems like it was clicking sooner than usual. Almost like it was cross threaded. Will try again in the morning.
I'm wondering if the boiling gas flooded the charcoal filter, or some other component and as it evaporates out it the system sees too much vapor.
Would be upset if this issue caused an expensive component failure.

Well, the 4LO, check engine and trac off lights are back. The cap wasn't the fix.

I'll look through my workshop manual to see if it has any diagnostic steps. Otherwise I guess I'll head to the dealer, again.

I had this happen more than a couple times with my FJ back in the day. The culprit was the charcoal canister, underneath the rear of my truck. You might check that to see if its cracked or there is some kind of issue with it. In the FJ, I had bent the exhaust down and it hit the charcoal canister.

Hope you're able to find out what the deal is.

I hope not. The vapor can is a $580 part. It's weird that three of us are having the same issues. I'm hoping for just the vapor filter that got messed with due to fluid bubbling.

EMISSION COMPONENTS for 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser

I might just bite the bullet and have the dealer diagnose it. Last time I messed with fuel I almost burned my house and bmw down

I didn't have fuel bubble out (though I didn't wheel with you guys in Moab), but I did notice a strong fuel smell when I stopped at 11,000' heading up to Grand Mesa. Definitely some venting going on.

No codes on my truck except for the VSA light which I cleared last night (TechStream said it was "steering wheel misalignment", which I chalk up to me being too aggressive with the friction anti-sway bar on my trailer).

Only throwing codes in the morning doesn't shock me. Could be that the fuel pressure in the tank decreases either due to cooling overnight, and it's failing the self-test when cold.

Wow, I'm surprised. And I guess I missed the Supra talk.

I'm expecting no less than GT-R specs V6 .. and I know ain't gonna be any closer to the 2JZ style ..
