Just went through this same thing on my son’s 4runner 3 months ago. Ended up replacing the engine. Every machine shop was minimum of 6 months out. Purchased quite a bit of OEM parts I did not use, drop me a note if you’re interested.
Jeff,

Say it ain't so!!

We still haven't started on this project as I want to make progress on my 80 front axle housing swap project.

In the meantime, I thought you might find this video interesting. It's a year late, but she dropped the video of her building the front bumper! Kids these days 🤣

OK Ash, now you are just showing off your amazing daughter. Gotta admit, she is a better welder than i am.

so the fun started last weekend with Isabelle and her friend Logan. The room mate helped out by opening up the A/C lines, removing the condenser in order to make room for his Milwaukee cordless impact tool for the removal of the cshaft bolt!! She wanted to do the bump method and was recharging her battery but the dude couldn't wait. He pulled off the bolt while she slept!

Anyway, after I rolled up, i said the hood has to go. Life is much easier when you have lots of light and ease of access. The cam lobes on the driver side has some marks even though they feel smooth. The shims have no corresponding marks and they're super smooth. See the circles in red.

Her engine is absolutely filthy, and I told I'd have disowned by now if I had known. ;) . When she was living with me (half time), I think mice moved in for a while. They move into all of my rigs since I live in the mountain.

I love my spawn to pieces. There I said it. Working in her garage, in a constant state of disorganization gave me fits, and minor coronaries every ten min. I brought two folding tables, moved every important small parts and all tools off the floor. I'm glad I can just walk away and not think about it. The concept of labeling things was foreign until I showed up with painters tape and sharpies. :bang:

Anyway, the heads will come off this week and I'll look for cracks and warps. At work we have a penetrant room for checking cracks using mag flux and black lighting. We also bunch of precision marble tables for measuring flatness.

All parts are ordered. HG kit coming from here. Timing belt kit from Amazon Aisin kit. Rest of the parts coming from Amayaya.

So far here's the order

I knew that I had to center myself before I returned the next day, so I headed up to the mountain for couple of hours of snowshoeing with the doggo. I accidentally buried my ride, then left for 1.5 hours, returned, and hooked up to a passing by Subaru to winch myself out. :hillbilly:

What!? This isn't happening in your driveway? With the resources you have in the garage? WTF dude. I'm not fond of auto parts from Amazon. Too many cases of counterfeits. Plus, Rockauto is usually cheaper, and I trust them to send me non fake parts. Hopefully she learned a lesson to keep the engine clean. Does she have a shop vac?

I'm helping her sprout her wings. Besides, is 15 to 20° colder at my elevation than her driveway.

The Aisin timing belt kit is the same from Amazon, or from anywhere else. I used it for my own V8 timing belt project, so I'm not worried about it. If you read the reviews, you'll see what I mean. I think Steve probably used the same kit as well.

The exh crossover bolts suck. Pull the manifolds and loosen the crossover on the passenger side. It'll wiggle enough to get things out.

On exhaust nuts buy new ones. Reusing the old ones results in galled threads and a bad day.

Don't forget the small bolt in the front of one head and the back of the other. Lotsa techs overlook them in the oil and think it's time to pull heads when in reality theres still one bolt in each head.

Get that girl a case of engine degreaser for Christmas!

Dang, the master has spoken. I didn't realize you were lurking MUD.

Hardly the master 🤣

I'm on here frequently now that I have a landcruiser or three...
Didn't I see a Gen3 4R in the backyard when I was there?

Tim the Toolman videos have been instrumental for Isabelle. He does a great job with this project. I'm prepping her for a lot of scrubbing this weekend. 😁

New nuts and studs have been ordered.

A cheap ultrasonic cleaner from Amazon works wonders for submersible parts. But when you're a kid you gotta scrub manually to appreciate it later in life!

You're raising her right for sure! New HGs and she'll be due for a Magnuson supercharger for that old 5VZ😬
