[Sniff] glad to help. Sorry I didn't want to deal with the PS, but you did what I would have done.

First one being the engine puked out couple of quarts of oil out of the oil cooler. Even though the three O rings were replaced, and the bolt was torqued down.
I've rebuilt a # of these and never had oil puke out of said on start up. U saying that oil came out around the bolt... or did it come out from around the block to cooler mating surface (this surface also gets a good cleaning)? I always cover the oil rings in a little oil before installing said, like u do on an oil filter before installing.

I'm not saying, it's my daughter saying ;) . She made it sound like it came from behind the cooler, and I cleaned the surface before re-installing. This was a curious thing, i must say.

I've got a 97 that also needs head gaskets done. Thanks for this thread. The whole thing is great. Did you wind up using the composite HG or the MLS one from 99+? I think it looks like the composite one, and I've heard those are more forgiving with bad surface finishes.

I know you said if it was your rig, you'd pull the block and send it out for resurfacing. Do you know how much extra effort is involved in pulling the block once you've got the heads off?

Good morning ,
I believe I was instructed to get the head gaskets made for that year engine. So everything was like it came from the factory, for a lack of a better word.

I think you would save a lot of headache and backache if you simply pull the engine out then put it on an engine stand. I believe my 19-year-old daughter cussed quite a bit due to the exhaust piping nightmare scenario, and the usual first time gotchas she ran into while pulling everything off from the top of the engine.

Just as an aside, I also blew the head gasket on my two UZ engine. Currently I am running at with a blown head gasket, but I added the bars head gasket fix liquid into the cooling system. I am running this engine like I stole it, and there has been zero issues. With that said, I am saving up all the parts purchases right now so that next spring, I will pull the engine out and do the head gaskets, as well as other things that need to be dealt with.

I'm simply a huge proponent of pulling an engine out to work on the engine stand over being bent over for hours.
