Hodgepodge Part Deux? 200 body on a 40 frame?

Edited to add: OP, I didn't mention it before but I've had my engine replaced by a Toyota dealer. Send me a PM if you'd like to see the service record for comparable data on time, replacement engine cost, etc. I'd also echo others' advice to get a second opinion.

Hi @Landcrsrgirl . Sorry to hear this on your first post. Looks like the car has been with you a long time and has served well. Not all is lost! You've come to the right place. There are reasonable options out there.

I don't know the extent of the overheating event. It's wholly possible that your son caught the issue in time. The car can loose a lot of coolant and steam, before truly overheating and distorting/destroying the motor. Was this at city speeds or on the freeway?

I would strongly suggest you not let them rebuild the engine if it requires opening up the motors head/headgasket and machining the deck. If it overheated to this degree (they might be lying if it happened on surface streets), then it's time to consider other options. While possible, I doubt it impacted the transmission.

Checkout this thread:

I would also encourage you to checkout car-parts.com. You can find complete whole motors ("engine") on that site from Tundras or Sequoia. You can be whole again for likely less than half of their quoted costs.
Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately my son was on the highway and had to pull off at an exit. Not good.

Cool, I will when I have this afternoon. Thanks!

Yes, when you get the second opinion, get more details. I'm very interested to hear why they think the transmission is also damaged.

@Landcrsrgirl Please don't take this personally, but I would take a Male Person with you when talking to the Dealer. I have had many experiences with Female friends who get a completely different response when there is a Male present, even if he doesn't know anything about cars. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with them.

Ask for details about exactly what is wrong and why. Post here and we'll do our best.

I notice you are in PA. Maybe there's a local club member that can provide some assistance.

Perhaps reach out to @dci blair from the Keystone club. His shop may be able to assist in the West Chester area.

Something sounds off. Get a second opinion is my opinion.
Yes definitely should get a second opinion. Lots here in mud that can refer you to a reputable shop in your area.

Good advice here, sadly repair shops, oil change shops and dealerships will give women the run around because they assume they don't know any better. One would hope they would be honest but there are those that are not.

In the late 80's, I blew a water hose on my Jaguar XJS-V12 at about 130mph on the Autobahn in Germany. Warped the heads and lost a couple of valves.

I can't imagine blowing a hose on a 5.7 and doing serious damage driving on city streets and shutting down at the first sign of trouble.

It is not only women. The shops will take advantage of anyone who may not be so technically savvy - and - since women aren't usually considered "car guys", they are often preyed upon.

Got our 2nd opinion. The engine is done..:( The original dealer, in Florida, whonhas serviced the car since I bought it looked over everything and spoke to the service advisor in PA. The Florida dealer in May thoroughly went through the LC before it headed north. After s month of being in PA, my son noticed water on his floor board. He took LC to dealer. They fixed something w the AC to stop the leak. At that time they give him a large checklist w hoses checked green among 30 other things checked green. However, I’ve attached what they recommended to him be done additionally to LC. My son didn’t do them cause he saw the hoses checked green so he figured he could wait till the next appt. Darn hose burst, what luck! Uggh, now we need to figure out what to do. There is no compression and the dealer says at a minimum it’s an engine. We found a 2008 w 88,000 miles for 6k. Dealer isn’t sure the service dept will let them use it. They think if he drove far w LC smoking, it’s possible hr hosed transmission. They explained it but I’m a total novice about this mechanical stuff. They won’t know if transmission is damaged till they get the new engine in. Woo, so lengthy and I’m probably missing some key info for you LC geniuses but that’s the jist of it. My son is super bummed out. Hope someone else can learn from this.

Related but unrelated question: Don’t these engines have overheat protection (cylinder deactivation/limp mode)? It just seems as if Landcrsrgirl’s son pulled off at the first sign of trouble and wasn’t towing a big trailer there should be zero or near zero damage, right?

Also the transmission thing, what??? Only a radiator/heat exchanger failure (mixing antifreeze and transmission fluid) would trash the transmission in my mind...
He was on 95, major highway, and made it to an exit. Hmmm..probably too far.

If the dealer won’t do the job with a used engine an independent mechanic will. The trick is finding a good one, but they are definitely out there.

I still don’t see how it hosed the transmission other than maybe steam in the radiator raising the trans fluid temp.. even that seems like a long shot to actually cause damage so quickly.

The problem is without a running engine it may be difficult to verify the transmission is good.

What a horrible situation. Sorry for you and your son. I'm sure there are good indy mechanics closer, but there are two that I know well that I'd trust with this job. Trollhole in Greenville SC, and ACC (Atlanta Custom Creations) in Atlanta. Both are Cruiser shops that wouldn't blink an eye with a job like this.
