Any fishing stops along the way? Asking for @rkymtnflyfisher.

Not sure I’d take a 40 series from the Land of Nod on the 1st leg of the journey, 2400 miles as the crow flys. But, but but I could be convinced to take the Tundra, fall in as tail end Charlie, and drag a trailer as a contact truck/parts truck. Maybe a cooler or two?? Depending on time of departure, I may stay for the hunting..😎

Edit: It’s either this trip or I sign on with Shackleton, get on a wooden boat, and look for the North West Passage.

Having a tow rig with a trailer is sometimes a good idea on trips like this, especially if a large group of 40's went.

I always told people my 40 was good for 2 people and a comfortable camp - don't shoot anything bigger than a couple of grouse if you plan to bring it home. I did the trip boise to phoenix (1000 miles) and back with my tools several times with the wolf dogs Perry 150# and his sister Penny 90#, I was full enough I had to go outside to change my mind!

I'm with you on this. With my jump seats removed, I can easily pack a week (or more)'s worth of food, supplies, tools, and camping equipment for two people inside, without having anything on a roof rack. I do have a 4Plus carrier for external gerry cans though.

If I were to do a trip like the ALCAN, it would probably be solo; doubtful I could convince any of my daughters or my wife to go with me. Maybe a grandson though? If I did it solo, I would remove the passenger seat and replace it with a plywood platform for my fridge.

Not forgotten about this, just firming up a route. Should have something by Oct 5.
Get to Lewiston ID, and take back country roads north almost to the Canadian border and the work my way across the Selkirks to colville, WA, and then across to the Canadian border at north of Orville WA. Then in Canada take the western most road north into Alaska. I will put together a detailed hwy listing with towns and such, and then a gps route later in the year.
Plan would be to leave Texas in mid May, probably 2 weeks to get the Canadian border, and another week to Fairbanks. Will do some side trips along the way. There is a nez perce trail that might be interesting, and of course parts of the Idaho BDR.

Canadian customs seem fairly strict on weapons, even bear spray, drugs, and maple syrup not made in Canada. (Well, some food products anyway).

Wow! I just found and read the 3 current pages of this amazing thread. I was 23 in 1976 and my dad always wanted to go up the AlCan hiway and see this amazing territory. My FJ40 was only 2 then and we sent away for books, maps and details on making the trip…extra tires, fuel, and there were no cell phones back then.

My dream was to see the arctic circle area and sought out to plan it for nearly 5 years later. By 1981 I was married with 1 kid and one on the way. Today I will be 72 shortly…those days have seemingly passed along with those dreams. Reading everyone’s comments is so thrilling and saddening at the same time..

PLEASE ..document that trip as I vicariously will follow you up and back , in the jump seat if necessary, in those FJ40’s.

BEST OF LUCK !!
