Wayne,

Feel free to post up the 4 door stuff. We are looking at building a 4 door 79 here at the shop for a customer so any help is greatly appreciated.

I have already contacted Meano & Sons in South Africa about sending us some panels to help us get started with a conversion. They responded but they were not interested in sending over anything. They said that everything is custom built in house and that panels can differ from one batch to the next.

http://www.meanoconversions.co.za/DoubleCabGalery.htm

If you know of someone else who can help out, please let me know. We can do it in house but if someone who has done it before can help us with the roof panel, B pillar, and rear doors, it would be greatly appreciated. It would also be great if we don't have to burn 2 cabs to make a 4 door.

John,
You guys have all the new toys. Are you going to keep this one for more then 6 months? Kidding. A wrecked 100 series would be nice under that body! Hope all is well

Peter

What are you talking about? John had the Whale a year before I bought it from him :)

John, once again, you are outdoing yourself. I am watching with awe. Any chance you can get some 4 door (HZJ77) bodies? If so, put me first in line!

You two know me well! I will keep this one for awhile.

We sold one complete body to a well known 80 and 100 series builder. I bet most of you can figure out who it is. It won't be ready for awhile but it is going to be SICK! Not sure if he is going with a 80 or 100 but we will just have to wait and see.

Thanks Jason. No lead on a 77 or 76 bodies or even Troopy bodies for that matter. Just these 79's for now. We are building a 4 door for a customer and it should be pretty slick.

If you are seriously considering a 76 or 77, please let me know. We can custom build you one just like these 79's. It would not be that much different or even that difficult.

What a great project John...can't wait to follow along and see the final outcome.

;)

Love how well the 70 series body fits the 60 chassie.Great job.
This is a pic of a customers 2008 70 V8 TDI with a 400mm cab extension,Tuff bullbar and siderails/steps 3'' lift,12000Lbs winch etc.
This has a top mounted intercooler on the V8 with the factory scooped bonnet

Nice conversion,do you know who did it?

I would have preferred black steel bar work and some serious offroad rims.
Everyone to their own though.
Is that pic taken in welshpool?

Hey John, I wondered if...

1- Are you going to be able to get the dual fuel tanks incorporated into the 62 frame?

2- Are you going with the 1HZ/R151 drivetrain or are you going with 3FE/A440 or H55, or the 5.3L Vortec you'd mentioned in the original for sale thread.

This thread, coupled with the recent H42 into an FJ80 swap thread has me very excited about someday owning a kick a 70 series pickup. :). Good luck sir, Michael.

That is a pretty sweet 79 extra cab there. Thanks for the pic.

I am using an original front 79 tank that we have here at the shop. We will try to use the 60/62 tank in the rear but we will have to see how well it fits. If it does not fit all that well, we will try something different. I really want both tanks so we will try our best to make that happen. I'm sure we can come up with something.

I am actually going with a 1HZ/H55F drivetrain out of a 1994 HZJ75 pickup for my particular project. I have it so I am going to use it.

There are so many routes to go with a build like this. The cheapest way would be to start with a FJ60 and keep the 2F and H42. The next cheapest would be to go with a FJ62 and keep the 3FE and A440. The only reason the 62 route would be a little more expensive is because the FJ62 may be more expensive to purchase than a FJ60. The next would be to go 3FE and H55F. Lots of options here and it all depends on what the customer wants and what they want to spend.

Going with a 60 or 62 and keeping the existing drive train, one could be into the build for $15K-$20K including the purchase price of the 60 or 62. Not too bad for a custom build. Sure, it is not factory but it is a cool truck nonetheless.

The project has been on hold for a few weeks as we are getting ready for Cruise Moab. We are working nights and weekends trying to finish up some Cruisers for the event. Once CM is over, we will be back on the 79 build.

Stay tuned.

Awesome on the two tanks, and going to the 1HZ/H55 combo. Very cool. Are you guys putting any of these on an 80 chassis? I'm just curious in case this happens for me someday. This is probably one of the most interesting threads in quite some time. :).

Just found this thread. Love LC pickups. This would be a great option if one was looking for a clean FJ45 with no luck. I too would be interested in any info on putting one of these bodies on a 80 Series Frame? I have a spare... How limited are these stripped bodies? Are they available on a regular basis?

You have a great looking truck. I like the look of the 35" tires.

A little progress on the 79. New pics will come later. Bed mounts are made and engine is going in soon. Dash assembly is painted and will also be going in soon. It's coming along nicely. Sorry, no pics but I promise I will update soon.

MSGGrunt: Thanks for the compliments. These bodies are available on a regular basis and we have quite a few. They are available until we run out. As mentioned, we have quite a few but.....we do have a limited supply. If you are interested, contact me. I predict we will not have any more by the end of this year. Also, once mine and a few others that we are building for ih8mud forum members are finished, I think we will sell the rest of them rather quickly.

As far as an 80 frame goes; it's doable and would not be that much different than a 60/62 frame. The only thing is that the tires will stick out quite a bit.

Here are some pictures of the bed sitting on an 80 frame. As you can see, the stock tires stick out past the bed quite a little. This would be great for someone that wants to have a bigger truck. A 60/62 frame would be a much better choice for someone who does not like the tires sticking out. We have a few 60/62 frames that we have saved for these builds. If anyone is interested, we can build you a roller and you can take it home and finish.

Pics coming soon.

Just asking about the 80 series frame because I have one with axle filled with 4.88 gears and a Aussie locker in the rear and I like the idea of coils. I do not like the tires sticking out that much though. Could some of it be off-set with the correct back-spaced rims and narrower tires? I like the skinny tire look. Something like the 11.00 x 16 XLs I ran on my 80. Maybe a 35" or 36" 10.50 wide tire?

Grease, make sure you post some pics of the dash.

The 60 series frame would be a lot easier especially since you are already doing it and spoke of possibly offer a kit for the do-it-yourself type. Great truck.... The short roof rack looks great as well and I like the pic I saw of one with a full canvas cover over the bed.

The problem with the 80 series is that the frame is very wide in the rear. There is not a lot of room to run an offset rim to narrow the stance. You could run flares like Crushers suggested but it still might look a little funny. It would be nice to have the coils but the 60 frames work exceptionally well.

A few pics: engine ready to go in. dash pieces cleaned up. Speedo assembly in MPH....ohhhh yeahhhhhhh The 1HZ and speedo are from the same truck. Yes, it truly does have 75K miles on it.

Engine will go in soon. And then it gets torn down again.........to have the frame powder coated. And then......we get to build.

Stay tuned.
