Not cheap is a good answer....but amazingly not exorbitantly expensive either.

When people go out and spend $45K on a Sequoia, these are reasonably cheap to build yourself for $25-30K.

But of course, that's up front cash....not financed like a Sequoia.
 
well... I expect it's more than I'd be willing to pay, and probably more than I did pay for mine :)

But, having a used frame made it much easier to swallow Proffitt's choice to cut a foot out of it (wheelbase was too long for my uses). I'm much happier dumping money into my HZJ79 project than buying a new truck.
 
there around 5k if you want a shiny new one from toyota

I was quoted 3700 from one dealership...that was almost tempting...but I'm going a different route than everyone that is having proffitts build them one.

I would like to think that we had something to do with that, having ordered a "few" of the 79 frames. ;) Maybe someone from Toyota is watching these builds......if you are.......Yes, we really DO want the 70 series and some of us are willing to build our own to make it happen.

Matt....$3700 is pretty good for a new 79 frame with the subtank. Are you still thinking 80 series frame? That will be a cool build if you go that route. Have you started yet? Post some progress.

It seems to be becomeing fairly popular in Aus that guys are putting there 75 series ute cabs on 80 series chassis for the coil comfort,flex,wider track . Seems the back body mounts line up the middle ones are very close and don't need much work and the front ones need to be fabricated up
 
John...I'm gonna assume $3700 was without the sub tank...at that price it would have been tempting to buy the 79 frame but I'm still going 80 frame. I have the 80 frame and a freshly rebuilt set of locking 80 axles. I can't see not going this route. Its gonna be harder but I think it will be worth it...plus I never do anything the easy way. The worst part is gonna be stretching the frame. There is no straight section that is easily stretched.

I haven't started yet...I'm working on parting out the donor 80 and getting my ducks in a row for the build. I will have the 80 body off this week and I will test fit the cab on the frame. I can tell you this the front mounts for the core support are way off. Although, from just mocking up the front clip and fenders it doesn't look like the tires will stick out much at all.

As far Toyota ever bringing the 70 series in...I will bet you my truck when its done that it won't happen. The majority of Americans are as far away from utilitarian as it gets. The few of us that are is not enough demand for toyota. Sad but true. The bigger/easier is better mentality has gotten this country in heaps of trouble. Which goes hand in hand with the fat and lazy epidemic that has engulfed the country. It's ok though b/c obama brought the change and its helped out some much :doh:



Clint...I've read the same thing about the 80 frame and 79 body on some of the oz forums. I Will be able to confirm this soon. I know the front mounts are way off. If the rest are that close though...I may be tempted to build a tray and drive it around for a while and not stretch the frame.

Indeed you guys have considering we are now co-workers at the same "holding" company based out of UT. ;)

The only way I actually found out there were new 7x series frames in the US available for purchase was after CDan got back from his Delta, CO trip.

I only wish Toyota was paying attention.

Unfortunately, as we all know, they are not paying attention to the enthusiast.

They are paying attention to the globalized bottom line.

That bottom line does not include the 7x series as built by Toyota Auto Body ever making it to the US....ever.

It will never happen.

Luckily, we have folks like you and Jeremiah and folks like Greg willing to invest in making sure that those who really want it, can have it.

there's usually a politician/lobbyist at the bottom or top of letting anything sensible happen in this country

I can't confirm it but until i stick the cab on but...the rear mounts on the cab on the 79 have the same measurements as the 3rd mounts on the 80...give or take an 1/8-1/4"!

Yeah, I know Toyota will never bring the 70 series in. It's wishful thinking for sure but the bottom line is, that there is no money in it. Period. And honestly, I would NEVER pay $40K for a single cab truck like this with no bells and whistle. Don't get me wrong, I am not a bells and whistles type of guy but $40K for a truck like this is expensive. For me, the only reason to have one and to spend that time of money, is that no one else (or very few people) will have one.

At least there will be a few custom trucks floating around the US for people to see. It's crazy, every time I drive mine (which is every day), I get a wave or a thumbs up. I have even had people follow me to ask me what the hell it is I'm driving. It's definitely a truck that sticks out. It's funny, either people don't even recognize it or the people that know what it is, are anxious to know how I got it. When I say "I built it", they look at me with this 'look' that says....."Uh-huh, you're full of SH$T!"

I bought the tray for my old 75 from ute-ltd. Good product and I now know why the Aussies love the tray decks. They are so practical. Attached is a picture of my old 1994 HZJ75 with 3400 lbs of flag stone in it. This picture was taken about 2 weeks before the 75 got parted out. The drive train, dash, etc is now sitting in my 79.

That truck is the biggest reason that I check out the 70's section. It is just flat cool!!

I agree, the 70 series would be a tough sale here in the states because of the way most other Americans use or more accurately consume vehicles. In most other countries, such as where the 70 series, along with several other interesting utiliitarian vehicles are offered they are purchased for their longevity and servicability. They are typically purchased without financing and used for 20-40 years or used for industry. Here we are quickly beginning to purchase largely disposable vehicles with a very short servicable life of 10-20 years.

I think we will just have to depend on Proffitt's to make the 70 series available here!
 
Hi Grease Cruiser,

I own a HJ 61 with a rotten body. I had the idea to cut the body behind the front seats and to build a box like a camper shell behind it. Part of the idea was to increase the wheelbase by using 79 springs like you did. You wrote about an extension of 8,5 ", I think it is just arround 5 " (13 cm in real money) because the axle is not in the middle of this 79 spring.
This 13 cm would be very helpfull to avoid a long overhang.

Do you have more photos or a detailed description of this part of your conversion?
