So no quite 2 years on I am finally getting back to working on this project.
Ultimate goal is to have it driveable by Memorial day weekend 2026 to take on the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB) near Natural Bridge, KY.

Planning to use the tub and fenders, and other items I purchased from @Chungas Revenge as a much better starting point.

Pulled it into the garage Dec, 27th 2025

Yeah buddy!!!

I was just thinking about this the other day. I knew you were busy with the new house. If you don’t mind I’ll follow along.

Got the tub pulled off the frame this week. Frame appears to be salvageable Couple small cracks and excessive rust I will need to patch.

Plan is to wire wheel the frame/axles the best I can then use Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator paint. And top coat with black chassis paint. Gotta get my parts list together and start getting the orders placed.

Goal is to focus on making it mechanically sound first (brakes, clutch, drivetrain). Keeping the water out and the heat in the cab is the secondary goal. Only major upgrade planned at this point is power steering.

If you’re not planning on “serious tier level one” off-reading, take a look at EPS as a potential power steering solution. Great bang for $$$ performance, no surgery required and it reverts back to OE steering if the electric motor ever gives up the ghost.

Nice shop!!!

Had to fix the stuck transfer case linkage. It was all seized up on the shafts, so with some persuasion I was able to get it moving freely. While doing so I realized that with a simple mod I would be able to have 2wd low range. How much I will used that functionality is TBD, but I at least have the option now.

Added a 'gate' to the shifter so I can't inadvertently shift from 2 hi to 2 low.

Had to do a bit of rust repair on the new to me tub. The rear sill was roached, and had been patched/bondo'd a few times during it's life. I tried fabricating a one piece panel, but I don't have the correct equipment to make the 3/8" back to back bends. So ultimately decided to make it out of 3 separate pieces. I'm no body man, but it is good enough for me.

FJ80 parts is what I decided to go with for power steering. Fabricated a custom mount to run it where the factory air pump was. Planning to run it off the rear set of pulley grooves on the crank and water pump. I still need to mount box itself, that will be a project for this weekend.

Looks like you've been busy. I understand the shift gate from 2hi to 2low, it's a common alteration. I've done that in the past too. I don't understand the added shift gate. Between 2hi and 2 low is neutral.
