If you have comprehensive it will kick in in some states for a hit and run even if you don't have collision. Make sure you file a police report if you have the option to go that route. Not sure if you have any recourse if you only have liability.

AndersonDin, I hope you are ok? Have you had conversations with insurance or anyone else about this yet? I think you should, maybe an attorney.

I am NOT well versed in insurance. I think someone sideswiping or running you off the road would be considered collision and your insurance would still work with you, minus your deductible. I also think your insurance is responsible to help you with any of your injuries.

You seem to be taking this pretty well and I commend you for that. This may appear to be a costly mistake to you right now, but in the grand scheme of things it is not. It may be an inexpensive lesson. I carry full insurance on things I would have a hard time replacing with easily accessible cash or has a high likelihood of being totaled in a minor accident (ie 100 series). I carry full insurance on my cruisers and have used it.

You may also want to look at an inexpensive dash cam, hopefully catching the plate of someone like this. I may have an old one and would be happy to ship it to you (PM me an address).

Regarding the truck if insurance doesn't work with you or the other driver is never found, I would be entertaining getting the truck back in driveable (safely) condition, leave the battle scars and wheel it without worry. Or I would be looking at a '98 or so in the 4-5k range, I would NOT be fixing this for 15.

I wish you luck!

For those of you who forgot what it's like to be 16, car insurance is ridiculously expensive! I know, my 16 yr old was added to my policy this year and my policy more than doubled. If he was driving a beater, we would have went the route of liability only like OP.

Since OP only has liability and the semi took off, he is SOL. Chalk it up to one of life's lessons. Good on you for working all summer to buy it. Keep working and you'll get another one. In the meantime, see what the bone yard will give you for it and decide if it's worth parting out.

Thanks I just asked how much it is just to get if driving again... if it isn’t a Bad price I’ll do that. If they just charge a lot I’ll probably go to a salvage lot and pull the parts I need

Hopefully it's fixable, but if not, even some basic parting out would get you more money than a salvage yard. They almost always just want to give you a "wholesale scrap metal by the pound price" which means about $200-250. I don't know what the overall condition of your rig, interior and exterior, other than the wreck damage, but if you post on here that you are parting it out you could likely make a several hundred dollars on various interior parts and then still sell it to a salvage yard for the exact same $200-250. I would fix it if reasonable, or part out then salvage, but I wouldn't just give up and take it straight to salvage

OP, what you've described is an accident caused by the semi-truck that left the scene. Have you checked to see if there are any security cameras along the highway? You know the time, date, location and direction of travel, and someone must have at least a general description of the truck.

That's a lot damage in some really bad places. It doesn't appear to be something that I would want to tackle and I'm set up for it.

Probably a better route to take...would be to find another vehicle.

the rest of car is in Pristine condition. My plan is to find parts and try to rebuild

No cameras anywhere. And the people involved saw the truck for a brief moment, not long enough to give good descriptions... the Highway patrol man interviewed me any other drivers for less than 30 seconds each. I got the police report today and it stated that I was at fault for the wreck. The officer took no time to figure out what actually happened. So now were in a big mess.

Please speak with an attorney or two before you accept responsibility. I don't want this unfortunate incident to be uglier and costlier than it already is.

For a vehicle like this, why don't you have full coverage? Doesn't make any sense, a 1992 corolla that's worth $200 then yeah i'd get liability, but for something $10,000+ ??
My DD is A a 92 corolla, and I think it is still worth much more than $200. Lol...

bummer to see that happen,
rigs similar to this have been selling for 1800-2400 at Copart depending on location

Use it as a part truck and get another 100 for less

What is copart, I need to find another cruiser for under 1000 for parts.

100 series for under $1000? good luck, if 1 does come up for sale, it'll be gone quick and you'll need to jump on it.
under $2000 might be an easier find.
even high mileage rigs, 300K-400k, are $3000-3500
if not a member of copart, all the extra fees will add up.
