I have a new gripe and no one but you guys to vent to...

Our school district started online school this week - the school sent home Chromebooks/Ipads for the kids to use - I am sure at great expense.

My oldest just got off of an online class where the teacher told him they are not allowed to present any new material because there are some kids who can't join!!

I talked to a friend who's wife is a teacher. He said it is an equal opportunity thing - they have to be fair across the board and can't let kids fall behind.

I have been taking 4 vacation hours each day this week because this is taking SO MUCH to keep up with everything between the 3 kids (and my wife is still locked in the tower). Now I find out they are not going to actually learn anything?

Where has common sense gone in this country??!@#??!@#!? I think if this holds true over the next few weeks, my kids will become "the kids who can't get on"....

We've all lost it.

At my school students are expected to keep pace with the assignment. The caveat is they need to complete missed assignments within 2 days, including weekends. This is a high school. I'm suspecting your son is in middle or grade school? If you feel it's overwhelming contact your sons guidance counselor, not the teacher, and let the counselor know the situation and that he needs extended time because of a family situation.

It's mostly my 1st grader that needs the help. I need to help him through most of the things he is doing - a bunch of links to different websites/videos/sheets to fill out, etc.

Yesterday was horrid. Internet went down when 2 of them were on a Zoom call, a link for a daily agenda was not working, camera on a chromebook wasn't working, etc. It required constant input from a parent to keep it moving...

I've been following along and am glad your wife is stable Andy.

I teach a technology/shop class in a Delaware middle school and we are up against the same issues. About 50% of the kids log in to class sessions, and very few actively participate. We are competing against YouTube, TikTok and video games in an unstructured setting, there is sadly no way that we can manage these things remotely. I feel for the parents. My wife and I are both teachers and need to maintain seven hours of remote instruction daily while our own children are left to fend somewhat for themselves.

We live in a rural area of Cecil County and are mostly spared of direct contact with others. We get groceries every two weeks and pick up meat from a butcher and produce from a CSA, both by appointment. We take the kids for a remote 3 mile hike daily after work to get them away from screens. The biggest challenge is avoiding other humans, as everyone seems to be out at the parks. We don't let them play with their friends in the neighborhood and had to do Easter dinner with grandparents via Zoom.

My parents live in a condo and are both high-risk so they have not left in over a month I feel for them. Well my mother is about ready to pop, and she decided that the two of them were going to visit both me and my brother for Easter. We tamped that down fast. I think we are at the point right now where people are getting ready to break.

I gotta say, you sure can save a pile of money with no gas, no eating out, no family activities, wife sick and not buying stuff, no truck parts.....

Day #11 for Liz. Second day with no fever! Poor thing looks like she lost 20lb!

Andy - glad to see your wife is on the road to recovery. I'm sure it's been a long 11 days. Way to keep it together.

I gotta say, you sure can save a pile of money with no gas,

My neighbor is stuck in Nevada and he's letting me use his Tesla so I drive around don't even need to stop for gas. Costs about $10 to fully charge. Goes about 270 miles/charge. Charged twice this month. :P

My wife has an electric BMW I3. This is now our daily driver.
We haven’t been to a gas station in 7 weeks, as we figured that gas stations &
particularly gas pump handles were biologoically hazardous.
This is our contribution to lowering the price of gas ;)

Meanwhile, I’ve got the front of the 100 series torn apart.
Just found that the LHS inboard CV is a tripot but the inboard RHS is a OEM Birfield joint....

I feel your pain Caz, it's been tough to make sure my kids school work gets done while trying to remain productive working from home.

How lucky am i? I only wish I had free time. I could really get projects done if I didn't have work. This week was 56 hrs. The things I could do with that time.

And my hair is now shorter then it has been in 28 years. You can see the scar on my head from my accident at work a few months ago.

Today marks day #13. Nast night, Liz reached the 72 hour mark with no fever!

We talked about what to do, decided she can come down to the recliner - I'll continue to get things for her for a few days so she doesn't contaminate anything.

She seems really tired - came down, sat in the chair and fell asleep within 15 minutes.

I'm happy to have her back, I think being around the family again will lift her spirits.

Wonderful news, Andy and Liz!

I've been reading up on the Spanish Flu since everyone is making comparisons to it.

This synopsis by the History Channel covers things fairly succinctly: Spanish Flu

Also, information about the second wave: Why the Second Wave of the 1918 Spanish Flu Was So Deadly

"By the summer of 1919, the flu pandemic came to an end, as those that were infected either died or developed immunity."

It sounds like my brother in law may have it. He works in an Amazon warehouse and a number of other guys who work there have come down with it. He definitely has SOMETHING and the symptoms are in line. He's 27 and relatively healthy so I suspect he'll be OK - but he was just visiting my mother in law the other night, and she's a mess health wise...

Update here - he doesn’t have it. Test came back negative and whatever he did have ran its course in about 3 days. Minor blessing since 4 of his coworkers at the warehouse have tested positive.

Baby steps! Glad to hear she's improving steadily.

Been MIA for a min while running ragged to get life sorted. Closed my restaurant in Shrewsbury forever ... not worth the time, effort and drive time to deal with what seemed like non-stop staffing issues the past year. I can't complain, it's been 20 years, it was a good run. Landlord and I have always been cool, so I did my part right and they treated me right as I vacated. Equipment off to auction for pennies on the dollar I'm sure, but happy to have it gone.

On the home front, my son turned 17 at the end of March and it was a sad non-event. I feel for him a little. He misses friend, school and his girlfriend. I keep reminding him that it is ALWAYS the dumb horny teenager that makes a poor below the belt decision and gets everyone killed in every Zombie show and movie ever ... DON'T BE THAT GUY. He's like a roommate that works 3rd shift, we see each other for a few mins mid-day to speak about homework and assignments and then he's off to work on-line, workout and play video games all night. I got up early one morning (5am) and bumped into him just heading to bed. Ahhhh, to be young again.

We are struggling though all the online learning stuff for him atm. AP testing is now online next week and new grading system just came out today that seems everyone gets an A?!?! SATs are jacked and so are college visits. Think I may sense a gap year because of all of this. Anyway, overall his life is currently roses other than not seeing his girl.

My wife, who is a teacher, is grinding through learning how to teach 3rd & 4th grade special ed remotely. It's a s***show daily complicated by us losing power one day and having no internet for a few hours.

@caz ... I am happy your wife is doing better, that is great news!! Family is always the top priority and first responders deserve all our respect. I just want to mention that I fully understand your frustration with how the schooling is going and the teachers are frustrated too, but please keep in mind that children don't get to pick their financial situation. Really bright kids can be stuck at an economic disadvantage and shouldn't suffer because they come from a broken home or their parents are struggling with employment or substance abuse.

As far as myself, I closed down Shrews, took a 2 week hiatus and closed the other restaurant too. Just now getting back open limited hours to ~40% of normal business. PPP is a complete joke for the restaurant industry, don't even get me started on that. I applied for the EDIL $10k Grant money that was supposed to be to me in 3 days ... that was 3 weeks ago. About what I expect from our government, long on promises and short on results. We will see if I ever get anything. but I'm not holding my breath.

On the plus side ... I'm cleaning and sorting out my shed. So there's that ... /rant
