well I'm not a gun nut, but I certainly like most of the sig products I've seen in person, and the 228 I own. I personally don't know enough about the pros vs cons of the extractor design. What sets the grounds rules for a 1911 style pistol? Some changes from the original design I"m sure might be considered improvements...but I'm out of my league on that discussion.
The other part of the equation...at least for me is ...$$ and so about 1K or something around that number is the max for the weapon in question.
Man...Life. Got a little one now, and no land cruisers.. Not enough hours in the day.
That being said. I am in the market for a big ass used tire. So if you get anything in the shop that has a couple hundred lbs of weight to it, holler at me!
I'm a Sig fan. The 228 is possibly the finest 9mm ever made. John Moses Browning set the ground rules for a 1911 back in 1911. In that $1000 price range, I'd probably be looking at a STI. But it's a pretty good budget to get you a quality 1911. Colt, Springfield, STI all have offerings that I'd be happy to own at the sub $1000 price point. If you are willing to look at used guns, you might even find some Dan Wessons and higher end Colt (gold cup) and Springfields (trp?) in that price range. I know the remington and ruger offerings can be had for hundreds less than your max, and you could get two Rock Islands and still have money left over. The RIA's (armscorp) have a rep of being a great value pistol. The Sigs and S&W's have their fans, but I wont buy one. Asides from the purist stand point of the extractor, the more proprietary parts that they have, the less likely you are to be able to find a replacement years from now. There are 113 years worth of standard 1911 extractors in the world should I ever need one, how many are there for a sig or S&W, particularly if the s*** hits the fan?
Another thing about the Sig "1911", and I think it has been rectified on their current offerings, is that the slide kind of has a sig profile vs a traditional 1911 profile and finding a holster that fits well can be an issue. Just based on what I've read.

Yeah, i mentioned about the sig slide in my second post on the subject. It can make finding a holster a bit problematic from what I hear.
Find a good used Wilson combat or spend the money and buy new. Fine pieces of weaponry. That being said, I wouldn't be scared of a SIG. Most all these "purists" didn't know about guns until it became "cool"and Nintendo 64 wasn't.
WC is a nice gun, but my 5+ year trolling period, waiting patiently for one that's been gently used (or ran into the ground, I likes 'em with some character) has still failed to find me one that could be had reasonably. I have an Ed Brown, and it's been very reliable and accurate, but it's like buying a new truck- you are scared to use the $#@% thing because you might scratch it.
There are dozens of brands that stick to the A1 format, and I'm happy to shoot 'em all. Heck, I've owned and shot several Kimbers (gasp!), and they've mostly been great guns to shoot. Sometimes just because the interwebs say something, doesn't make it so.

Dan Wesson makes very nice production 1911s. All tool steel, machined parts. No MIM parts.

Many other good options out there if you're in that price range of a used Wilson. Look at a Guncrafter and Spring Armory Professional.
