I think I'd top myself if my BJ40 deteriorated that fast Coen.

It's hard enough to keep on top of new rust as it is.

(I'm still dreaming of getting my BJ40 garaged one day. It's been permanently out in the weather ever since I bought it back in 1981.)

Out in the weather in NZ is a whole different world from out in the weather in South America. When I lived in Panama, the leather steering wheel cover on my hj75 Ute would get furry white mould on it if I didn't drive it for a week just from the moisture in the air.

Looks great Coen. I hope that frame is holding up.

Tom - just find a desert and move there. ;) I just did. Retired, moved to back home to Arizona. The Blue Mule is on a ship somewhere between Togo and Texas, complete with rusted out fenders, much like Coen's. I'll swap in the new ones I have in storage when the Mule gets here.

Welcome home! How did the rest of your rig hold up in Togo? Let me know if you're ever in Santa Fe.

Mercy buckets! The mule did OK considering the climate and the problems I had with the re-spray when I rebuilt it. I really need to replace the rear sill - couldn't do that earlier. That is the main problem area. It was a good choice for the conditions in Lomé, and Togo in general. Once it arrives here in AZ, I'll swap the fenders, do some other, mostly minor, work on it, then I'll be ready to put some desert pinstripes on it

Best,

Best,

Contact awl-TEQ here on mud (Kevin) and see if he has any rear sills left. He makes a really nice replacement.

Brace for it: labour is slightly higher in Arizona than in Malawi.....

Hi guy's I think it will be an unstoppable project, called rust. This will haunt us forever. But we can't just leave the car and buy another one. This one belongs to us and we'll keep on rebuilding it as long as we travel. Hope to get to Panama to talk to Paul about it someday... Anybody got some inside connection with him? Maybe getting something sponsored?

In the upcoming Toyota Trails you will be able to read and see about the restauration process in La Paz, Bolivia. A bit of trauma relived.

But for now, we must keep the show on the road... Brazil, we love that country!

The left radiator support broke on the Transamazônica. Last time this happened was in Ushuaia.

Guess what I'm installing on the rear bumper of our Land Cruiser?

Just park the Land Cruiser in front a Supermarket in Brazil and you will have paparazzi's around you in 5 minutes.

Do you cook on gas? Is your gas coming out of the wall, or do you have to go get a cylinder? In Brasil, they deliver!

Just wanted to let you all know and see that the new t-shirts [designed by SackWear] are really nice. We just got some shipped and are wearing them proudly when we were visiting Machu Picchu in Peru.

Untraceable: not license plate, logs untagged and driving at ridiculous speeds. Illegal logging has to stop!

Then they cut up all the Amazon rainforest and turn into lumber....

Big planks turn into smaller planks by these guys. Impressive. We see a lot of untagged logs here... :-(

After a few hours of this, everything is covered under a thin layer of red bull dust. Penetrates everything!

Large fires along the Transamazônica make us aware of the destruction that comes with progress. Is this what we want?

Given we elect our governments based only on their promises to keep economic growth at a break neck pace and maintain our disposable society in order to keep profits at ikea strong, I'd say it must be what we want.

Always love to see your pics Coen...

But these ones won't load for me...

Anyone else with the same problem? (Perhaps I should be more patient but I gave them at least 60 seconds...)

Edit: Never mind... Tried again about 8 hours later and they now load fine....

And as expected, your pics didn't disappoint...

what does it cost a year to travel the way you do?

We are two different persons who see different things during the day. We will each have our version of the truth and we discus just that. And with 5 websites, a few magazines monthly, and guestblogging, we work a lot, not much room for endless campfire talks. But these moments come and go. When we meet other travellers or other interesting people, all work goes overboard and we sit and talk.

As for budgeting, that's a whole different story and largely depends on where you are and how fast you drive. Also what you like to include in that budget. If you want to have a better understanding of that, please have a look at some of our spending overviews here.

Adventurous greetings,
Coen

thanks, so about $35/day for the 2 of you ... $12000 a year, cheaper than owning a home. interesting.
