We had posted about this story a while back and I started reading when the thread was only 3 pages or so. I keep checking back for new installments but I have forgotten what I have already read since it has been a while. I am going to go through and copy just the story and put it in a word format so I can just re-read the story itself.

you do know about the "new" "view first unread" button at the top left of each thread, don't you :flipoff2:

just don't clear the cache of your browser while reading MUD, ever

1998 Toyota Land Cruiser 4dr 4WD $9,990 - Boardwalk Motorcars LLC Baton Rouge Louisiana 70816

Found this on CL today.. going to go check it out wed I think. Might try and sell my FJ to my brother and buy this if its in decent shape.

Brad, in my opinion, the only reason to even look at a 98-99 100 series is if it has the rear locker (was an option on the rear axle for 98-99). The locker switch would be where i have mine located. You can see it doesn't have the rear locker. The 98-99s do not have atrac or any traction control system at all, so you truly have an open/open diff setup.

The two main downsides to a 98-99 are no VSC/ATRAC and the weaker front differential.
The 98-99s have a 2 pinion/spider gear front diff vs the 4 pinion of the 00-07s.
The reason Toyota made the switch was because so many people were blowing up the front differentials. A lot of these would happen just driving on the street, but mainly from wheeling.

What the majority of people do if they are buying a 98-99 and plan to wheel it is to very quickly replace the front diff with an ARB. An ARB replaces the entire differential and it is far stronger than even the 4pinion front diff.

With that said, it does look pretty clean and rather low miles for a 98. If you'd want me to look at it with you let me know.

Well I was thinking with all the money I had left over from selling my FJ I could replace the front with an ARB like you said and just use ARB lockers. Plus I would still have a lot of cash left over for bumpers, winch, lights ect...

But unfortunately my brother has been taking after his me and getting into some shenanigans. So my parents said no FJ for him until he graduates next spring.:o I do not think if I sold my FJ outright or traded it in I would get enough for me to want to start over. I really need to just stick it out with what I have now until I figure out what the hell I am doing with my life before I start building up another vehicle. I appreciate you offering though to help though!

I ran across this on CL if anyone is interested.

1982 Toyota Land cruiser Fj60

That front shackle mount looks a little suspect. Also, the location of those steering dampeners would cause them to get destroyed pretty quickly out on the trails. Looks like he was going for the "lifted F250" look with em.

I've got wheels and tires to get rid of!!!

Just in case anyone needs an extra set of wheels
