awesome work pat! I really want to get the body off my 60 so i can powder my frame and roll my new cable locked axles under it. Just no place to do it with my current situation and even less time. If you haven't powdered that stand yet how difficult would it be to put a geared crank on it? turning that tall 12ht on it is kinda sketchy, as soon as its starts to get on its side it will flip and take an arm off. I bought a geared engine stand for a couple hundred bucks that has been invaluable. It's a two person effort other wise unless you use an engine hoist to help rotate it down slowly.

I've been considering doing that bit haven really looked at how to go about it. My plan was to use a fork truck to help rotate it but that is only a thing when the engine is at the powder coat shop. I will do some digging on hpw to go about it. A rotator would be sweet.

I am hoping to get my 1fz-fe on the stand directly as a nice test. I am going to try to simultaneously do the turbo build on my 80 while getting Chunk going too.

take an old 4.10 third member and mount it up with a crank on the drive shaft flange end and the engine bracket spigot where the axle shaft would go. lol

@roma042987 , I am planning on powder coating the frame and some of the parts, but probably just blasting and painting the axles and springs and such because I would like to switch out to cable lockers when I can scrape up the money. Either way, I figure get the bottom of the truck right and the frame right because it is so tough to do if they are not apart. From there, most everything is a bolt on and can be revisited later when time and money allow. I'm calling this a "soft" frame off restoration. I hope this all works out. If not, I will have one sweet pile of parts in the for sale section

I have been looking at powder coat colors that match the original 033 white. I always assumed the white colors from MrT were really similar, at least the older ones. My expectation was to find RAL 9010 to be the closest. It is kind of a yellowy off white. The gas door on my white 87 parts truck actually is really close to RAL 9002 so to double check I had a tiny bit pf paint mixed and it is very close. I am planning on doing powder on the inner fenders, radiator suppirt, probably the fenders and possibly the hood for an easy way to get the insides and undersides done in the proper white and still paint the exterior

Here's a picture with the old gas door back side, paint sample, and RAL 9002 powder sample. The powder is lighter, but barely. I'm going to coat an inner fender for a bigger sample.

I coated a bigger panel and polished a spot on the 033 parts truck. The 033 is a tiny bit more yellow than RAL 9002 but should still work.

Baby steps. I got the bottom of Chunk blasted today. The rear area around the gas tank has super tough factory undercoat, much like the 3m Rocker Schutz. I gave up trying to strip it off even with my 185 cfm compressor/blast rig. I am pretty sure that is the coating going back on so it stands to reason that if it is adhering that well, it can stay there. I hit it all hard because the blaster will reveal weak and rusty spots that way. I'm super confident it is down to a good clean workable surface.

Next I sprayed the blasted areas with a water based zirconium sealer that we use on items we powder coat. It is a nice rust inhibitor/adhesion promotor and will keep things stable until I can epoxy prime the bottom this weekend.

The powder coat ovens are off for the day but hang at a nice warm temp because they have been pouring heat into the floor all day so I rolled Chunk in for a little forced drying. 136 degrees is like a nice Arizona summer day right?

You really can't see much difference after the sealer has been put on but it really helps.

It's tough. I have been a servant to the removal of 5 billion leaves, trying to get the carport/deck done, firewood for the boiler, and busy as ever at work but having such a cool truck to get to "earn" time for makes me hustle!

I know. I am trying to not let my attention deficit tendencies beat me. As long as I go hard after what I am excited about working on, all good. If I let off and get distracted, it might be 17 years before this truck is done.

Truly I think my 80 has been an awesome truck and is shaping up to be just about perfect for long distance travel, power (when the turbo is done), range via two gas tanks, capability, and just pure fun.

But this 60 diesel project is kind of like the perfect 2nd approach to the same idea. Long distance machine via 5 speed, fuel sipping diesel. Lots of power, solid capability, TONS of fun, and awesome classic look. Once set up with little additions like a tent on the roof (on a Bowfin rack of course), fridge, storage, and armor, it will be hard to pick anything over this truck.

More progress. I got a good portion of the patchwork welded in. The drivers side is definitely the worse of the two. I used a phosphate coating in the back area before the patch hid the hole. Then weld thru primer beneath the patches. It was quite a bit of piecing together but I got the quarter rebuilt, and the wheelhouse patched as well.

I also welded up and reshaped the little drains that had rusted through. Still have to do the inner patch.

I like the look of the lower rocker trim but it really looks like it might just be a problem out wheeling so I decided to weld those holes up too
