Hey folks,

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a good and safe way of carrying a chainsaw outside of an 80 Series. No, I don't have a roof rack and don't plan on getting one, but I do have an IPOR bumper and tire carrier.

Check out some ATV chainsaw mounts. Most mount to some sort of tubing are pretty tough.

I'd consider getting a mount that would hold a cased chainsaw. I don't know what yours is like, but I wouldn't want mine mounted where it'd be dripping on things without being in a case.;p

I have been scouring the net. There are some secure solutions for ATVs out there, but none that would easily adapt. Most are based on either clamping the bar of the saw with the head resting on a padded metal flange or a scabbard which the bar just slips into.
There are some interesting scabbards out there for bucket trucks, but for some reason they're insanely expensive.
After a bunch of thought and staring at my truck in the driveway, I think I want a scabbard with an adjustable support to go around the top of a spare tire and straps to secure the bottom. the saw itself can be secured with a small cable or strap across the top of the scabbard.

My use for this will be limited. Typically, I pull my M416 with my Swampers and the saw/fuel/chain/oil/etc lives in the trailer. However when I'm out on the trail and cutting, I really hate keeping the saw in the truck.

just an idea, but if your saw use is really limited (duration and distance) then maybe a hitch receiver basket of some sort. Long ago, I had a flat plate winch mount that was on a 2" receiver. Thinking something like that--envision a hitch-cargo basket, just smaller. Or heck, use one of those cargo thingies and that way you have a deck outside the truck to load the firewood, too.

I think that it would be easy to mount a chainsaw case to a couple load bars on the roof. Throw a lock on the case or ratchet strap to hold it closed and you'd be good to go for temporary mounting up top. I'm liking SAS's suggestion of the cargo basket for holding other gear and wood if need be. The cargo basket would likely be the safest option. I added a winch plate on the front of my 40 to hold gear inbetween the bezel and bumper. This way you won't fall on your ass with a saw in your hands when you're climbing up your truck to get gear off of the roof with muddy boots.
You may want to put a drop cord on the case to a fixed point in the event that the saw gets knocked off of the roof.

The hitch mounted cargo box isn't really an option as I'm usually off road when cutting. I would like something that has easy access. I'm not overly concerned with security.

This seems like a pretty common item that really should be on the market. I have been browsing every off road forum both national and international and there is nothing out there. Perhaps it's time to mock up a prototype.

One of the local metal places sells one online. It looks like a decent option. D'animal had posted in another thread on the subject a few years ago that if its going to be for a long term that you should be supporting it by the head not the bar to prevent damage.

They look good and stout in person.

That looks to be a very nice solution!

Keep us posted Jon.

D'Animal (the chainsaw expert) told me, prolly in the thread a few years ago a chain saw should be stored flat on it's belly. These mounts would be ok, but not for long term storage. I've been thinking of storing my small stehl under the hood in my 60 I think there is room on the right side of the engine, I haven't got around to building a bracket. Right now my chainsaw lives on my roofrack but anything you can mount lower and forward the better it is.

The mount that I'm considering would be a "while on the trail" solution. Long distance storage would be in my trailer along with accessories.
Long term storage is in my garage on a shelf.

One of the solutions I'm considering is a scabbard mount secured to the top ARB bar. It's high enough to keep the lower part of the chain way off the ground and enables me to see the saw and avoid possible obstacles. It would also be easier access than having it on the rear of the truck.

I saw a 1 gallon plastic fuel can by Blitz that would fit perfectly on the front "step" of the ARB as well. A spare chain and chain oil can be carried anywhere in the truck.

Because I sleep in the truck, the goal here is minimize the inevitable stink and mess that a chainsaw brings to the party.
