Would this get damaged in off road situations if you're supporting it by the bar and not the body? Seems like the bar could bend or break.

I hope this link comes up. I just got an email from Mac's and they have just produced what is the coolest chainsaw scabbard I've ever seen. I have their D-vice, and the quality is very high. I recommend without reservation.

It would be easy to mount this to a roof rack, tire rack or even inside an internal cargo box.
 
No, the bar on a chainsaw is very flexible and tough, as are chainsaws in general. The idea seems to be to keep the bar clamped as close to the body as possible. But its a proven method, can't argue with what works.
