I’m new here and still pretty new to the FJ40 world. A little backstory: I own a 1974 FJ40 with the original 1.5F engine. I restored it last year and it’s great, but I’ve never been able to get it running quite right. I’ve finally narrowed the issue down to the carburetor.

Right now I’m running an Amazon 2F-style carb that cost about $120, with a vacuum-operated secondary. I want to go back to the original setup and keep the truck as close to stock as possible, which means getting an original Aisin carb with the mechanical secondary.

I found one locally for $300, but it’s in rough shape and needs a full rebuild. I also contacted Mark—whose name I’ve seen recommended here—and his rebuilt carbs are pretty expensive.

So what’s the best move?
Should I buy the $300 carb from the ’71 FJ40, rebuild it myself, and run it on my ’74? Should I just save up and get one from Mark? Or should I forget the carb altogether and go with EFI?

If you are not familiar with rebuilding a carb you can look for videos online to get an idea what to look for. The owner of Marlin crawler offroad, I think Pinhead has one(S). There are out there. I bought several carb kits from fj40jim or jim C.here on this site. I also purchased items from Mark not carb related. There are a of of good vendors that participate on this site. Use the search function, there is a lot of info on this site if you know where to look..
I perfer keeping the original carb but sometimes they are abused or too far gone, you have to replace them. And sometimes it's hard to finding a good core. But still the original carbs are hard to beat when you have them running right.

Yes, ditch the amazon unit for the correct mechanical operated secondary carb. I'd recommend shopping for a spare as $300 is very high for a used unit needing a rebuild....

Then rebuild or have someone rebuild it properly. Key recommendation is using the FSM for the rebuild + parts fiche to verify jetting/parts as many folks overlook certain items.

Will the 71 carb work on my 74? I heard the jets and core of the carb is different on the 74 while reading around on this websight.
Probably will work, I forget exactly when they started making these carbs. I'm running the 10/'73 carb that might have come on the 1.5F in my 12/'74 FJ55. You're going to be removing the jets anyway when you rebuild it, I don't know if cores are different. One thing to check is if the '71 has the same linkage or cable actuation that you need.

I added some photos wonder if you could see if its worth it . The pictures are not the best this carb is about 5 hours away and commitment drive to go get

The original carb before the amazon one is gone? Did you check with Jim C? He can sometimes sell you one even if you don't have a core.

For a bit more than $300 just get the City Racer carb. By all means, fiddle with the carb you have though, learn on that. Make your mistakes there.

I have not. How do I contact?
Yea I was a dumb teenager, 16 when I got the 40 and didn't know what I had , when I trying to get it running I was looking at rebuild kits for 60 bucks and saw an entire carb that was like 90 bucks so I said why not and threw the original carb away. Biggest mistake of my life lol

I looked at the city racer as I've done alot of business with them for other things, it just looks like it has a vacume advanced for secondary and the throttle linkage is gonna intervene with my pcv on the insilator plate between the carb and the intake so I dont think it will work right. I have no clue

You’ll make bigger mistakes soon enough.

You’ll get it sorted. You could practice tearing down the cheap carb, I be there is trash in there.

Idk anything about stk carbs, but I recall this thread by @Skreddy. It might be helpful on how to correct import carb issues.
