I’m new here and still pretty new to the FJ40 world. A little backstory: I own a 1974 FJ40 with the original 1.5F engine. I restored it last year and it’s great, but I’ve never been able to get it running quite right. I’ve finally narrowed the issue down to the carburetor.

Right now I’m running an Amazon 2F-style carb that cost about $120, with a vacuum-operated secondary. I want to go back to the original setup and keep the truck as close to stock as possible, which means getting an original Aisin carb with the mechanical secondary.

I found one locally for $300, but it’s in rough shape and needs a full rebuild. I also contacted Mark—whose name I’ve seen recommended here—and his rebuilt carbs are pretty expensive.

So what’s the best move?
Should I buy the $300 carb from the ’71 FJ40, rebuild it myself, and run it on my ’74? Should I just save up and get one from Mark? Or should I forget the carb altogether and go with EFI?

Idk anything about stk carbs, but I recall this thread by @Skreddy. It might be helpful on how to correct import carb issues.

Good call. Fantastic info in there.

Yea I was a dumb teenager, 16 when I got the 40 and didn't know what I had , when I trying to get it running I was looking at rebuild kits for 60 bucks and saw an entire carb that was like 90 bucks so I said why not and threw the original carb away. Biggest mistake of my life lol
I through a WHOLE engine away after I bought a new one because I was tired of moving it around 25 years ago!!! Everything attached......I'll just buy new parts for my 40 I said to myself, besides, it was old and dirty.....just replace it all!!! Younger dumber me had NO clue what I was in for and the $$$$ I tossed into a hole in the back of a graveyard:bang::flush:

Putting emails and or phone numbers, even contact info, in open threads, is just bait for scammers.

A link to Jim's site is way safer

fixed good point

Scammers have gotten so sophisticated, that they can use AI to spoof email addresses, names contacts, whatever, and try to contact the OP saying they're Jim, Mark, whoever. Next thing the OP knows, he's out $500.
