A strong cold front will usher in strong thunderstorms across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia Friday, and forecasters say some storms could be severe.
The National Weather Service said that two lines of storms could impact the region. The first line is expected to cross the area Friday afternoon, while another will pass through during the overnight hours.
Forecasters said that the stronger storms could contain penny-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
At 11:30 a.m., storms were already forming in northeast Georgia and moving northeast into western North Carolina.
No watches have been issued so far, but the NWS said that some of the storms, especially overnight, could be severe. Some N.C. counties bordering Tennessee had severe weather warnings issued just before noon.
The cold front will also bring the possibility of snow in the N.C. mountains and freezing temperatures across western N.C. over the weekend.
