BXD10 Mega Cruiser

I am making this thread to document and display the Toyota Mega Cruiser model BXD10.

This particular model was designed for the Japanese Military, making it very similar to the civilian version the BXD20.

I will post pictures as often as possible.

Enjoy.

The first set of pictures are of the units stationed in Japan.

Chassis and body

Rolling chassis was assembled... awaiting for the bodies.

This frame is simple and tuff. It is fully boxed with only 6 body mounts for the tub.

There are 2 steering boxes for the 4 wheel steer. Large oil coolers for the power steering and for the transmission.

Onboard compressor in the engine bay to inflate the tires from either 1.0 Bar or 2.2 Bar of air pressure.

Electric lockers in both axles and a CDL.

The smashed in lights in the rear are the special military infrared lights.

Assembly

Roll bar are bolted to the B pillar and at the rear of the tub.

This is the original lettering that was spray painted black before the units left the military auction lot. Lacquer thinner brought it back.

The dash is purely steel, having no dash pads on it. A single speaker in the centre of the dash for the AM radio that is included.
Fuse panel is located in the dash as well and tucked away quite high.

Steering wheel resembles one from an 80 series. No tilt on this model!

Edit: The hole on the tub in the last picture by the tranny hump is for placing the body mount.

Looks a lot like a hummer. How are you able to get those back here, and are they for personal use?

If you do some digging on the internet, some say AM General was going to get some legal action on T0Y0TA if these were to be ever sold in North America.

They were simply disassembled and rebuilt upon arrival.

Unsure at the moment if any will be sold or what not, one will go for a paint job and the other 3 may remain in their faded green colour.

15B FT

I'll include a few shots of the 15B FT.

The front is jammed with a radiator with a canvas blind for cold weather use, then a intercooler along with a tranny fluid cooler and a powersteering cooler.

The hood is fibreglass, notice the hooks attached to the frame for air-lifing the unit.

On picture #2 there is a compressor sitting vertically in the top right portion of the picture.

Driver

Seating is basic and stiff. Hopefully the independent suspension and long wheel base makes for a smooth ride.

The windshield has three wiper arms and the glass is about 180 cm wide!

Instrument cluster is very basic with only a speedometer, fuel, and coolant temp.
Quite a few dummy lights as well, will update when I remember them again.
And of course e locker & CDL diagram!

Typical looking 80 series AT shifter, and rubber matting for sound deadening...fire extinguisher missing.

Other details

The jumper seats bear resemblance to prior jumper seats designed for Cruisers.
The canvas strap that hold these ones up when folded differs by having a hook at the end and a tensioner to snug up any slack.

There is also a "master" kill switch under the front left jumper seat. The battery tray is under the passenger seat.

The front doors are also similar to early 40 series soft doors with the central window regulator that moves vertically. The finish of the doors is amazing, they seal nicely and have absolutely no flex or wiggle in them. Doors lock from the interior, but no key holes to unlock them from the exterior.

Here is a shot of the fuel tank. It is poly, stout and huge! It sits on the passenger side, nestled high up to the tub.

:ekk: amazing ..

Couple of questions ..

1. Did you already know where to put what .. ? the engine looks with bunch of wires and hoses .. something different to any regular civilian 15B-FT .?

2. Why so wide the " tranny " hump .. ?

3. you said 2 steering boxes .. can't see drag links and tie rod for IFS .?

4. Which turbo model came in there .. CT12B ..?

3. you said 2 steering boxes .. can't see drag links and tie rod for IFS .?

4. Which turbo model came in there .. CT12B ..?

1. No prior knowledge of what wire or hose went where, but thanks to phenomenal packaging by Japan4x4, everything connected nicely during the build.

2. The tranny hump encases the entire power train and fuel tank, the frame is completely hidden once the body is attached.

3. All Mega Cruisers have a double wishbone independent suspension for both the front and rear. As well these are portal axles, tucking away the bulk of the steering components very close to the frame. Both steering boxes are attached inside of the frame rail. I will try to find the rolling chasis pictures.

4. Unsure of turbo currently, did not see much for badging...may have to remove heat shields to see it.

See EPC diagrams for steering boxes and front suspension set up.

Thanks for posting. I hope they didnt send you guys the radiated ones.;)

Just to confirm whether the engine is 14bt or 15bt?? At a glance, is a 14bt to me. I might be wrong by looking at distance.:confused: Hope is 15bt.

All Mega Cruisers were 15B FT or 15B FTE with a quoted 150 hp.
The military version had the 15B FT and the civilian version was electronically controlled via ECU.

Very cool, thanks for posting!

The character you can see there is a stylized version of the character '', which means 'general, ordinary'. I imagine it means the truck was a 'general purpose' unit.

Heck, if you can get one, I'll take just the 15B-FT... I don't even need a transmission! PM me if you cna get any more of this stuff!!!
