Has that version still got 8 valves? That would explain why the valve cover looks more like a 14B than a 15B-FT.

I'd like to get a hold of one of those portal assemblies and see what the likelihood is of making them work on a Tacoma or 100 series. Having the inboard brakes makes it seem more difficult than to just make some new control arms.

Maybe there's one out there with a bad body. I have an idea...

Now that would be cool...

You are right this is a 15BT no F... I belive the intake angle (glow screen assemblies) are different on the FT and FTE versions.

I'll still take one please!

Driving!

Day 2 of the one unit moving on its own power.
The motor runs smoothly.
Turbo spools up quickly and sounds great.

The ride is unbelievably smooth! :steer:
Driving down off of a curb is barely noticeable at 15 km/h, without any jarring to occupants. Toyota engineers sure built this thing well.
4 wheel steer works at low speeds / in reverse, and it is needed to manoeuvre this thing.

Last hurdle accomplished was getting all the lights to work, since the "master" dash switch was busted before leaving the military lot. Even some of the busted military lights work too...fog lights look extremely similar to FJ40 ones.

Thanks Dave for the clarification.

The valve cover only has valve specs / tolerances and torque info for connecting rods, etc.

The turbo possesses no badging except for "TOYOTA" on the bottom half.

Got the Crusier up to 105 km/hr on a freeway... feels more at home around 90ish km/hr.

Yeah, the head of an FT or FTE would have '16 VALVE' Stamped into the metal...

I was in Edmonton yesterday and drove by and had a quick look. I never thought I would see a Mega Cruiser! And then to see 2 of them! So cool. Congrats!

i also dropped by last month and got to see the bare chassis.
VERY interesting steering setup.highly engineered.the portals are equiped with ctis.,but the tires/wheels are an unusual size...17.5 inch.

the wheels are proprietary...odd bolt pattern, and high back spacing (like a hummer h1 wheel).altogether an interesting rig...spare parts though...

It is what it is. The civilian version still has part numbers alive. As well this suspension was used in 4WD Dyna's, so these parts get carried over as well.

Tires are very unique Bridgestone Mud Duelers...I found the Jap site that has them. :p Agricultural tires come in this rim size, but not practical for road use.

if you don't mind .. and have the chance to take a pic of the front and rear steering links .?

Sure, it will be out on the weekend, so I'll grab pics and possibly a video.

Here's what some elbow grease can do to that old paint!

TURBO:

It's a CT26. Now forgive me for the advertising, but this big beast would really benefit from an upgrade. And with that huge intercooler (by Toyota standards) it could take 20+ psi really well. What revs does it do at 90 (or 105) in overdrive? EDIT - I just saw theers no tacho....

I would like one of these trucks, not sure when I would use it.... but I want one.

The inboard rear disks (and front?) are awesome

For those of yiou chasing the 15B-FT.... they are available in Australia for ~ $4500

Update

Took one on a 200 km round trip.
It is sure wide! I found it important in keeping to the shoulder, since it ate up practically the entire lane.

Driving is comfortable and quite easy.

Here are some pictures of steering components on another unit.

dan took me for a spin in one today...hit a set of railway tracks at about 80k...it floated over like the tracks weren't there.these tracks normally toss my 60 about nicely.thanks to low gears it seems to get along well.

amazing turning radius (sub 30 foot),but hummer width.totally impractical for suberban living...i'd never be able to park it anywhere.needs to have a custom camper shell on the back, like a hummer ambulance body.would make a fine expo rig.
