Ok, so talked with Toyota. Told them will not take buyback, gave them the number to my mechanic and told them figure it out. I want an aftermarket equivalent or used. Anything but buyback. Guy said will call me back in 1 business day. Will keep you posted.

At least you are getting a response, OPie disappeared.
With blue book values.... I wonder if one could force buyback at current market prices (only works if the 62 is a beeaater)

Got that done when they did the tank recall. All it is is a plastic slide-stop that goes on the seatbelt (just the rears I seem to remember). Nothing seemingly serious. When I asked the service dude at the dealer about that recall, he basically snorted and said it was pretty pointless..

Not that I want to see fewer 60 series on the road, but sometimes you might be surprised at the buyback price. The Tacoma I had before my 60 was bought back by Toyota. They have me a couple grad more for it than what I paid for it five years previous, 80k miles later and a bunch of dings, dents & scrapes. It made sense to me at the time. Just food for thought. I wouldn't let a 60 go to the crusher though.

This whole safety s*** recall sound like another way for the greenies to get our rigs off the road.

@Benjaman I think it has a whole lot to do with where you live, related to the "greenies" at least. I live in SC, north of Spartanburg and there are a great deal of older vehicles on the road here. Tons of old pickups and 60s-80s cars.

Going in today, they still want to give me a buy back offer despite my insistence of a repair. Guy states, they still have to go through the process of buyback regardless of the outcome. So, I'll give you guys a price check when i get the offer. My truck by the way id in great shape everything works as it should, 175k on the odometer, good body, engine and tranny. Near perfect interior and it is bone stock with the exception of the roof rack which I built.

Can these goons demand that you turn over this 'unsafe' vehicle by force of law? What if you say 'that's nice' - and walk away, after the offer?

They absolutely cannot.

As it was explained to me by the tech at Toyota, the issue is excessive pressure build up within the tank rupturing the seam where the tank is sealed together and fuel/vapor leaking out. Don't know if any actually exploded, but obviously the possibility is there for fire.

In my experience condition of he vehicle has nothing to do with the Toyota buyback price.

Also, when my 1996 Tacoma frame recall happened I had to sign an agreement absolving Toyota if I refused the buyback offer after it failed the frame inspection. Since I singed it and they considered the frame shot/ too expensive to replace, I couldn't do anything to it (like drive it) after it failed the inspection without assuming all liability and probably my insurance would be eventually nullified too. Their lawyers are all over this and they give a person limited options.

There are more options in this case. The OP does not have to sign off on anything, he can reject their offer and walk away and regroup.

IMHO Toyota will NEVER pay for an aftermarket tank. There is just too much liability. They will give you a decent buy back offer in the 8k range if the truck is in okay condition, based on comps.
