Builds Building the BJZ43 = FJ43 + FJZ80 + BJ75 :)

there is a place in Brisbane that usually has them in stock

So for the purpose of the experiment I am going to set a parameter of 900 mm being the reference point from the front body seam to the center of the front Axle. The Front Body seam is the one where the door hinges bolt inside and is very obvious. The front wheel base so to speak will not change and will be used as the clocking point for everything else.

With that in mind and way to may hours of searching for an answer I decided it was time to play with the visuals.

hmm maybe the BJZ43 needs a rear luggage area or motor bike rack :)

The wheels on that 80 chassis are too distracting, I cannot focus on what you are trying to do with those in the picture. Swap them out so I can follow along.

Just for you @Tank5

That is better! I like where you are going with this build!

Thanks the only part I have not fully got my head around is the width and how I will make that work aspect wise. If I can't get around the current width I will look at custom offset wheel or cutting the axles down. Rear is easy enough as I can get long splined and make it any width but front will need to drop to 60's width

I had started with a 45 on an 80 chassis and had the body mounted on the frame. The best I could do to keep the proportions close was to use a 9" wide wheel with 4.5" back spacing. The 12.50 wide tire stuck out three inches past the fender and bed sides.

I had fenders widened 3 inches and was planning to use aqualu rear fender flares on the tub.

60 width would be better, that is what I am planning on my current build.

Yeah issue with the 60 is the coil mounts you would need to notch into the chassis rails or go Coil Overs and then you get no real benefit out of the 80's chassis. I will make custom front and rear fenders / flares along with barwork to try and retain the look I am after and "HOPEFULLY" I can pull it off.

The 35's in the pictures are 17 x 8.5 with 0 offest so 4.25 back space so to speak and their isn't much room to the coil so even custom offsets won't do much.

I think my only hope is to scale stuff up to match the width and try and divert attention. For example I will use larger stock style tail lights and push them out slightly from factory location so they blend with the rear tube flares and rear bar. Up front i will do tube fenders and run stock 1980's turn signal so they eat up some fender space etc.

Based on the quick mock up I did leaning the wheel I think I will make the chassis adjustable and play around with offset wheel base and see how it sits. I need to get it outside and get further from it as well as mock up a fender and front bib etc.

Ironically I think I will spend more time in mock up than what i will fabricating lol

Widening the front fenders does not look bad especially if you re center the turn signal lights.

I added 4" into my front guards by bastardising another rusty set I had. I put the indicator the same % out from the panel as an original one and it worked out okay. I then hide the additional width under brush bars and I copied an original ARB style bar we have here is Australia and made it 150mm wider. Wheels had around a 4 1/2" backspace and are 12 1/2" wide.

So after many hours of pondering, procrastinating, googling, mockups and stupid ideas the wheel base has been decided upon ... the bjz43 will have a 2520mm wheel base .

Thanks for all the suggestions, pictures and input.

Just a few quick pictures , here you can see a line that shows the factory 40 series over hang with the 35" tire roughly sitting where it may go.

When i started this project this is what I had in my head as far as rear over hang

I then cut out some 35" Tire Flare Flanges which @Twisty had tested on his silver 40 so I knew that a 35" tire would clear on full stuff. As you can see this would allow me to move the front of the opening rearward a few inches.

I then walked back and forward, round and round and scratched my head a few more times and decided that was the look I wanted so set the wheel base at 2520mm which would see me cutting 330mm out of the 80 series chassis and then bobbing the back to suit.

Like all good projects you have to have some concurrent activity so while I am dreamin up what i hope to be the perfect wheel base I am also addressing a few other issues such as sourcing the parts I need to put it all back together.

Now as you can imagine buying parts for a BJZ43 is not the easiest thing in the world as when you start to explain you have a 3B from a 1990 BJ60 connected to a H55 from an 82 BJ44 with a split case from an 86 FJ 60 mounted in a cut down FJZ80 chassis using a alloy 5 degree bell housing from a 1985 70 series there is no such thing as a quick look up. Luckily for me Bryce and Kurt from @cruiseroutfit have been up to the task and when I arrived home my UPS Guy had delivered a nice box filled with all sort of Sumo Goodness.

With all this work going on under and around the BJZ43 I didn't want to foregt about my fat ass so I went in search on what I think are teh best aftermarket seats for a 40 series in both look and fit.

The Recaro L series from the 80's 90's era. Identified by their squarish features and often with Mesh Head Rests. As luck would have it I found a well priced set on eBay and snapped them up. Once they arrived I put them in and checked fit and function before making the mounts.

Out with the Old !!

In with the New !!, yep they fit

Then off to get recovered in some black leather. I still need to steam them but you get the idea. I went with the leather for the simple reason that I had a few hides left over from another job and found it to wear very well.

"I'll just recover them with some leather I had left over...."
Fantastic work!

Fantastic work!

To be clear I had the hides not the skill to recover them. I didn't realise how that read till I saw your response and thought damn I hope people don't think I can sew :)
