Build Day Anyone????

Dan if UC or I have anything you need you are more than welcome to use it. The bender is Pro-tools and has a 1" and 2" dies. I believe the 2" is a 7" die.

If I can work it out I'd like to come help.

We have a JD Squared also so your dies should work. We have two different dies one is for 2.0" (6.5 radius) and the other is for 0.75" (2.25 radius) tubing. It is just a manual bender, none of the fancy hydraulic stuff just pull the lever. We also have a notcher that I should be getting back from another club member early next week.

We should have plenty of grinders at the shop but if Dan wants to bring some flap discs and grinding discs that would probably help.

An awning might be a good idea to keep some of the mess down but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Larry this would be a good time to get the club awning back together because I never have come to your house to pick up the poles for it.

Almost forgot there is also a large air compressor at the shop so we are good for air tools too.

I leave for 2 days and you guys take over. excellent work :grinpimp:

John/Josh---you guys rock, offering up the shop again for about the 3rd time in as many months, hats off!

I've been at OTMT since Friday afternoon and got back about an hour ago, hope to have a writeup tonight but frankly I'm so tired all I want to do is sleep.

Th build day looks like it will be a success, looking forward to it

Dan / Josh / Jack,
It looks like you will have the tools to make this a well oiled machine. I think the obvious approach is to use both benders and both notchers. This will allow you to set up one bender as the 2" bend station and the other as the 1.5" station. The same can be done with the notchers.

Josh,
The awning poles are ready when ever you are, but you may want to check on the availability of the other parts (canvas & joints).

So that Saturday (30th) is the actual HAMOM, right? If you need more hands, I may be able to make it. Never used any tubing equipment or a welder, but I've got decent shop skills.

Oops, my bad that Saturday is the Aug 30th. sorry guys. :whoops:

Thanks Rick for catching my error!

Dan, maybe you should rename the Avacodo and call it Timex. Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!

I was going to change the tag in GA to be Guac80.

Rick, I need help with more than tube, I need to gut the thing and get it ready for tube as well.

I know you can help with that!

I'll start working on the hall pass now. This would be a lot of fun and I am sure I would learn a thing or two.

The shop is actually at his office. Here is the address if anyone wants to mapquest it.

Smitty, if you can make it you will definitely learn something. John and Josh have taught me a great deal even if they don't realize it. I've been to the shop and it's a playground for fab work.

It's on my schedule, it will be great to get together again.

Just got the real address from Josh... I won't share it with TKinze or he might show up. :flipoff2:

I won't be able to make it... but really would like to. I'll be camping with the family that weekend. Can you guys fab me a muffler?

Thought I would catch you lurking around me.

I have some aluminum foil and scotch tape, that'll do it!

Dan,
Some additional thoughts from the peanut gallery for your consideration;

With the attendance list growing, it seems like the time is right for a task list of what needs to done matched to skills/volunteers. This should allow you to review all the tasks required plus give the rest of us a better understanding of your project vision. I would also expect it would generate the framework of a staff plan. If there are any "holes" in the staff plan, this could help identify it early and energize a few more volunteers to step forward.

There will be more details to be worked out, but breaking the planning down into managable bites and knocking them out now should help smooth out the order of battle.

Good idea Larry, are you sure you aren't a PM and not an engineer? :)

THE TASK LIST!!

- Remove front and rear seats, as well as center console, being respectful of the 8000 aftermarket wires
- Remove rear tool box (I will bring it empty)
- Remove all carpet and trim from the inside, pillars, and doors
- Remove all window regulators and glass from the doors
- Complete finish cuts for all the areas I rough cut to remove the roof
- Cap and ground all wiring snipped by my "rough cut" method
- Remove the interior metal from the pillars at driver and rear passenger to allow for the tube to be inside those pillars.
- Measure, bend, and install the underside bracing and flanges for the upper tubing
- Measure, bend, and install the driver hoop
- Measure, bend, and install rear passenger hoop
- Measure, bend, and install from runners to floorboard (I wanted these to go through the dash, but this may not be feasible, I want this to be the smalled, strongest tube I can get to keep my knees happy if it goes along the dash).
- Cross brace front runners, near windshield end, and triangulate the rear
- I want to brace the cage as well just behind the drivers seat, to allow for 5 point in the future. Same for the rear seats.
- I want to weld in a tab that we can add a nutsert to for existing seatbelts. I don't have the budget to go 5 point and swap seats, etc yet.
- hmm, if we have time I would like to gut the truck and get a lining of some sort on the floor before we put in the cage. Worst case is we install the driver seat and I drive home with everything else loose and I can install everything later once I line it.

That is all I can think of for draft, start adding on as needed! :)

Dan, What kind of lining for the floor? I think Herculiner or similar has a very slow dry time.

Dan,
Regrettably, I am a PE enginerd and a program manager so I am both.

Items from THE TASK LIST!!

- Remove the interior metal from the pillars at driver and rear passenger to allow for the tube to be inside those pillars.

Could location of the tube (hoop) inside the pillars result in the width of the hoop being narrower at the floor than the higher segments? If so, I am concerned that it won't fit as a single piece. This could be overcome by making it in two pieces and splicing the two into one, but additional tube stock sized to fit within the hoop size would be needed for a straight-strong splice.

- Measure, bend, and install from runners to floorboard (I wanted these to go through the dash, but this may not be feasible, I want this to be the smalled, strongest tube I can get to keep my knees happy if it goes along the dash).

Will this be the 3/4" dia tube that Josh has dies for? If so what wall thicknesses is it available in? (to meet your strength requirement)

You have identified a lot that needs to get done so there is plenty for everyone to get part of the action. Is there any possibility of pictures of the truck as she sits without the top. My enginerd nature migrates to pictures and drawings for project planning & problem/solution identification. Portions of the volunteer team may want/need this too.

One thing that came up last weekend for me was a desire to have a welding blanket to cover up parts of the truck close to welding zones (sparks & flash going every where and leaving the marks to prove it). This project may have a lot of close clearance welding so you may want to consider adding welding blankets to the borrow or buy list.
