Thanks. Road Draught Tube?

Simple tube from breather/rocker cover, hangs down side of engine to atmosphere, always slight positive pressure when running so no problems in deep water

So sounds like your turbo play is average. Joirnal bearings always have side play, it whether or not it touches the cover housing that makes it a concern. If you can spin it slowly and force it to touch then it's no good. Blade erosion is not good, but your blades don't seem to have unbelievably bad wear. I've run worse for years in the past and didn't notice a big difference. It put the turbo on a list of to-dos when you run out of things to do.

As far as your exhaust gasket....looks like there are multiple gaskets in there, or perhaps im seeing things. If a gasket blows out, get another and stuff it in. If it keeps blowing out I'd try a more flexible gasket material. If then it still blows out I'd think about getting the surface machined, but it would be my last choice.

Thanks Gerg. That was my take on the turbo. I can not move it far enough to hit the sides, so I think that I am good there.

For the exhaust, yes it looks like multiple gaskets to me as well. If I simply stuff more in, it will again fail at a time when I can afford it least. I think that I should remove the manifold and skim it down in an attempt to match whatever the head is sitting at.

So, something like this...

I didn't mean add extra gaskets to the already overly generous collection. I meant remove all the gaskets and use a new one in its place. Perhaps when I said "stuff one in" it sounded half ass. Sorry bout that. I use a razor blade to scrape off the old gasket material as it usually sticks here and there. If the mating surfaces are not true I'd be more suspect of the manifold rather than the head. Most machine shops can true up a manifold with ease on their belt sanders.

Ah, that sounds better, thanks. I suspect that I'll be doing this... I know that thicker gaskets are sometimes available as well...

Hey buddy you probably don't remember me but im the guy that ran into you over around Pismo beach at a gas station back in February of 2012 I was on a cross country road trip in my yellow 40. 12ht are as good as it gets in my book now lets see some pictures of that beauty

I certainly do remember you, and I believe that you had your wife or girl friend with you as well. I remember that your truck was well maintained. 4BT right? The weekend in Pismo was a lot of fun. Mine blew up the 2H in Oklahoma after almost two weeks of extreme low-high temperature extremes.

Once I get the thing running properly without any leaks, I'll work on getting photos done. It also needs a rewiring something fierce as this is the third engine (2F, 2H, 12HT).

yep girlfriend was with me. It was a 3b at the time and I've since added a turbo, recently did a head gasket and precups ;)
Ive actually sourced a new old stock 12ht for it as well so i'll be pulling it back apart when time permits

A new old stock 12HT? You lucky bastard! You will love it!

It's the pre-cups that did me in. get rid of them!

Okay, I've got the used 12HT installed. The exhaust manifold leaks at the #1 cylinder, I get the usual popping of a leaky manifold, but as I put my foot into it a bit more and the RPMs climb to 1800 and over, I also get a metallic scraping noise that is exactly timed with the exhaust popping. I have checked the turbo as well as I could without removing it. No end to end play to speak of, but about 0.25 to 0.5mm of side to side play. Again, this is just moving it with my fingers, no real measurements. The turbo spins freely by hand.

Any ideas?
