Thanks Dan,
Any idea where to get a complete 12ht?

Thanks. I saw the Gumtree and Japan adverts. I don't want to get into importing if I don't have to. I'll try Eco45...

Eco45 does not show up in the members list.

If you want to stick with the 2H I have a nice low kilometer 89' unit for sale. I replaced it with a ..........12HT :cool:

I think that I'll pass on that. Thanks. I got a line on basically a 12HT half-cut. A bit of stuff that I would not need, so I could sell the surplus off to help recoup my losses.

How did the swap over go. I believe that it should be piss easy as the mounting is all the same. Or am I horribly wrong?

Plug and play with all mounts etc the glow system needs the two 12ht relays and heat screen timer. The vacuum shut down needs a power supply from ignition or the 2h glow plug system. The fuel return can be run back to a T junction just before the fuel pump. I went to the extra trouble and ran it to the fuel tank. I'm going through all this now so I should be able to help if you need it.
The half shut will come with every thing you need.

Excellent! Many thanks for the info! My present glow system has the two relays, but my timer has sucked the kumara. Electrical issues I can certainly handle. I was just worried that it would not be plug and play with the mechanical. This makes me feel much better to know that it will fit right in.

The only part you will need to buy will be the spigot bearing and no doubt all the worn parts that will need replacing but some stuff can be swapped over from the 2h. These engines suit the hwy and fire trails more then rock crawling as they have a very touchy throttle.

I don't crawl. This is my daily driver. highway and trails is where it is at. My current clutch is four years old and it would be foolish not to replace it and the associated parts when I have the engine out.

Thanks!

Fey,
OZ is correct, it is simply plug and play. It all physically mounts exactly the same. I did not hook up the glow screen. I live in northern Alabama and have no starting issues at all. For the fuel return line I simply used the fuel return that was already there on my 45. It was sitting in the perfect place, I literally just slipped the hose on and installed the hose clamp. I assume your 12HT half cut is 12v? There was already a key hot wire under my dash (maybe from the missing radio) I used it and a ground for the shut down VSV. I had more trouble getting the correct VSV (my motor was 24v and I changed everything to 12v) than I did anything else on the entire install. If you have any questions about the install check out my build thread. I covered the install pretty well.

Can I ask where you are getting your half cut from? I have a friend that is about to start looking for a 12HT.

Also OZ is correct about how much you are going to like the difference between the 12HT and your 2H. My 45 has unbelievable power and speed. I have used it on the trial already and the throttle is a bit more twitchy than the 2H was.

Good luck and enjoy! If you have any questions I too well be happy to help.

Hi 76 FJ40! Thanks for the advise.

I am getting the engine and stuff (basically the ENTIRE HJ61) from Cross Country Cruisers in Southern California. $10K for EVERYTHING, including the rolling chassis. CCCruisers basically are buying the cars for the body parts and then selling off the chassis and engines systems. So, I'll get a low mileage 12HT, 5 Speed Transmission, Transfer Case, Drive line, Differentials, Air Conditioning, Gauge Cluster, etc... The only catch is that it is 24V. But I have all the 12V stuff to put on it anyway. (except for the VSV. Where did you get yours? I could always kludge as 24V source, switched via a 12V relay if I have to)

The guy at CCCrusiers is Duke. (310) 990-5818

Thanks Fey. I have the vsv and its part number posted on my build thread. That will be quicker for you spot in my thread than waiting on me to look up the part number. It is a Toyota part that I purchased from my local dealership for about $75.00.

Excellent! Thanks!

I forgot to put anti freeze in my truck. I froze my block and then a day later the precup dropped as i was driving. It locked up my rear end.

SOOOO, dont over heaT YOUR ENGINE AND DONT FREEEZE IT!

Ouch! I did put my engine through extremes on the trip when it broke. Pagosa Springs, CO, where it got down to about 8°F, to the leg of my trip between St. Louis, MO and Menphis, TN where I had a deadline and had to push hard to get there in time to see my nephew. However, on that leg of driving, it never overheated as far as I could tell.

Okay... Now one of my friends suggests that I install either a 1HZ or a 1HD-T. The 1HZ is an indirect injection engine which used precups, so I think that I'll steer clear. So, I will turn to the Mud Collective to try and decide if swapping my 2H with a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT would be worth the trouble. I believe that parts for all of these engines are still in production by Toyota and are generally readily available. Questions, I have many:

1. I understand that it is NOT a direct swap from an H2. What is different?
-> Pilot bearing in the transmission input shaft?
-> Motor mounts / location of motor mounts?
-> Glow plugs or air pre-heat screen (as in the 12HT)? - Screen per Wiki
-> Exhaust system?

2. Engine / Performance.
-> Max RPM? - 4200 per Wiki - equates to a speed way faster than I would ever go!
-> Cold starting performance? (the 2H really sucked!)
-> Durability 12HT vs. 1HD-(F)T?

I am sure that there are more questions to follow, but it is a start.

For the fitment issue, let it be known that I currently have a 4-speed from an Aussie HJ47, manufactured in Aug, 1984. No idea what the model number is.
