Finished up the bib/grill/bezel today and it looked so good i removed the picture of the motherinlaw and mounted it above the fireplace.
The missus said either it goes or she goes.
Gee i'm going to miss that gal.

The last few days i have been working on the bib. The reason that they all rust out at the bottom is Mr. T spot welded a channel iron behind the bib for support and to mount the hinge. Because it is not sealed in any way moisture gets behind there and starts to rust so i used a spot weld cutter and removed the channel piece so i can weld in new metal. The channel iron is 2x thicker than the bib and i was able to clean it down to bare metal and will reuse it. See the before and after.
Its almost like you made a 40 from scratch!

looking good once again... I wish I had the time to do the same... :D

I didn't want to split the empire so i removed the offending piece of Cruiser art from the mantle and installed it on the 40. I also painted the inside of the tub and am installing the front fenders. The checkerplate on the inside of the tub and the handy built-in storage box i did about 14 years ago and it is still good.

Really like that storage box, that's thinking outside the box! Yeah, its late...
Looks good. My 40 just made it back into the shop on Saturday for the same. I'm really
liking the original colour again.

The old rubber gaskets for the hood hinges were brittle and cracked so i made new ones out of inner tube, it was the same thickness.View attachment 1158910
The rubber inner tube might not sit flush on the metal and could allow water to remain under the edges. It won't seal.
The original pads didn't allow water under them. Something to think about maybe? Just my thoughts. J

Looking good, what did you use to clean and polish the checker plate... I've got a ton that needs love on my other rig... :D
I went online to find a bunch of different ways to clean up aluminum and ended up using a product call liquid ice that i had left over from wet sanding then polishing the 42. I applied the ice with a stiff scrub brush them rubbed with 4x4 inch pieces of carpet then finished it off with a high speed polisher.

I got the hood and windshield frame installed today and it's starting to look like a 40 again. It sure is nicer to put things together than taking things apart with rust and broken bolts etc. Where i can i am replacing rusty bolts with new ones and it sure looks a lot cleaner.

I finally got around to replacing the rear main oil seal yesterday. I used an engine hoist from the top to remove trans/transfer and dropped it down onto a piano dolly and rolled it out of the way. The clutch and both bearings were still good so i reused them and i serviced the hand brake shoes and drum while off. It was also a good time to throw some paint at the trans and covers etc. and to check and lube u-joints.

Sounds like she's nearly road worth again? Can't wait to see that truck since it's rebirth!

Some pics of the picker in action . My daughter bought this a few years ago to remove heavy steel plates from grand pianos and never used it and has asked me to try and sell it. I told her i had this one job to do with it before it goes so now it is for sale. She wants 160.00IMGP2010.webp IMGP2009.webp
