Great idea. I've been putting off buying a grinder for my mixer, this might put me over the edge. We eat a lot of pork sausage at $5 a lb.

I was thinking the same. Best appliance my wife ever bought and never used!

My Kitchenaid is actually older than I am (50+), Mom had it before I was born, effing indestructible piece of machinery.

I finally had to break down and get an actual meat grinder. After 15 or 20 years the meat grinder attachment on my Kitchen Aid finally cracked. Probably ran a ton of meat through it though and miles of sausages using the sausage horn attachment. The Kitchen Aid lives on, truly indestructible.

^ I had the same experience with my KA meat grinder attachment. I contacted KA but given mine was years old they wouldn't replace it under any type of warranty/assistance. And rather than turn around and spend another $100 on the same crappy plastic housing designed attachment I ended up with a small (#5) LEM grinder purchased on one of their special promos which will be handed down to the next gen when I'm done with it ;)...USA made and pure joy to use.

This is one of my favorite breakfast plates: Wavos :D

Shown with pork belly confit, poached eggs etc. I also make them on the Kenai with 30-minute out-of-the-river fresh sockeye that is PDG if I say so myself.

Homemade, cabinmade or trailmade...they're versatile and relatively easy to make in anywhere.

My meat grinder attachment is probably as old as the KA, it just keeps on grinding. No plastic parts in it.:flipoff2: To bad stuff gets built crappy instead of better as time goes on. :frown:

Well, in defense of the KA grinder attachment it did do the job for probably over twenty years and still works but I needed a good excuse to go bigger. And the 5 lb sausage stuffer is so much better than running it all through that tiny KA attachment. So the housing on your KA grinder is also metal? That must be the one that Lewis and Clark talked about in their journal......

While on subject and FWIW: Here's a photo of the cracks on my KA meat grinder attachment that eventually drove me to the LEM. No regrets...and the LEM with its unique self-feed auger design makes it super easy for 1-person to grind.

A collaboration with Mark A. last Monday in DV.

Bacon, eggs and O'Brian hash browns. Can all be done in the same fry pan if you're only cooking for one. We used two because we had 1/2 pound of bacon and a whole bag of the hash browns.

Yummy.

Spressoman, a good hose clamp would fix those cracks for another few years of service.

Thanks...but it was the excuse I needed to step up :D

This thread inspired me to upgrade my current breakfast menu.
Cross post from the CSC forum, cut and pasted here .......

My camping set up is all about easy and food is a big part. Up until recently (today) my camp breakfast has been instant maple oatmeal and a banana. Although the past would make my mama proud I was looking for change. Along comes cooking in a Ziplock bag  not new but new to me.

Tools needed:
Pot (7" wide)for boiling water
Stove for heat - I use a Jet Boil
Ziplock bags
Variety of ingredients - your choice but should include eggs

Ingredients:
2 eggs
Spinach
Pre cooked turkey sausage - 1
Cheese
Salt/pepper

Procedure:
Cut it all up and throw it in a Ziplock bag
Remove excess air from bag - not sure why I did this but it seems to work:hillbilly:
Into the boiling water for 12 mins - why 12mins, it looked good at that point:D

In the future for camping I will use a tortilla (no dishes to wash)but I didn't have any at the casa for the test so I used a plate.:meh: Add some sliced avocado and salsa...wala

For my first attempt Im totally happy and it tasted good

A couple of other notes making this appealing to me: The water can be from any source. When done you have safe warm water to wash and clean up with. Nothing sticks to the bag so a quick wash and you could reuse it:hillbilly:

On the above topic... How long is advisable to keep cracked eggs in a sealed container in the cooler? I'm fairly uneducated on cooking away from home base. And I'm not a germophobe but I am overly cautious with food spoilage and bacteria after a rather nasty event in my youth.

I love the 'water can be from any source' aspect of the above, too, Phil. Hot cleaning water!

Once cracked 2-4 days.

That's true. The KA mixer in my house, the attachment shaft has been cracked for about 25 years, hasn't broke yet. Mixer still chugging with no signs of stopping.

That's where mine is cracked as well. Still works and it's been cracked for who knows how long. I sure like the one I have now though, bigger pieces to wash....

We were going to split the pork butt roast today and use half for sausage but I threw the whole thing in the slow cooker. I'll do a whole roast as sausage later. FILM AT ELEVEN
