Brake upgrade part number help

Hi. I have a 93 HZJ73, my front brakes need to be changed. I figure I'd get the bigger 4 runner calipers, pads, rotors. Eventually later on get the 80 series brake booster and a better master cylinder. Can someone please tell me what would fit and if maybe there is a better solution. Thanks
 
I'm not aware of a rotor size upgrade, but definitely the larger calipers/pads are a help, not they should be matched to the master cylinder. I fitted HZJ75 calipers, which I believe are the same as 4Runner, DBA XP pads, but the biggest improvement came from the Master cylinder and 80 series booster. Do the booster first.

JDM Truck HZJAnything after 1990 have the same brake system as a 4Runner/Surf of the same time period. Pads/Rotors/Pads. Basically through 1999 (at least for the JDM).

And none of this is an upgrade. These systems are the same. It basically Toyota parts rationalization.
 
Good idea to do the booster first but my front rotors are warped and they now squeal. I was hoping to change some stuff first before getting a new booster. Maybe I'll order it all at once.

I would be surprised if your hzj73 is heavy enough to warrant bigger brakes. Are you having issues?

Even with my heavy hzj75 troopy, when I was having brake overheating issues, I looked at upgrading to larger brakes but my issues were all solved with maintenance (the LSPV in my case).

If you can lock up your tires on pavemt and brake on a grade w/o overheating then bigger brakes will do nothing for you.

If you can't do those things then you'll want to figure out why. Would be a shame to spend money on ineffective brake upgrades. I almost did.

I have 33" tires. I can't lock them up. No overheating issues. I need new rotors and pads anyway so why not if it's an easy upgrade? New calipers, pads and rotors in the rear. (everything ordered for 2007 FJ Cruiser)

I gues it depends on your definition of easy and whether that includes being easy on your wallet. And all upgrades have implications. Swap too many things at once can make getting it dialed in complicated.

If it were me I'd want to understand why my brakes aren't functioning and make targeted fixes.

That said, this thread has some excellent discussion on 70 series brake mods and may be helpful.

 
Hello,

A 70 Series-specific upgraded brake booster is available from Terrain Tamer.

You may have to do some cutting with the 80 Series booster to make it fit into your 73 Series.

Regarding calipers and rotors, 70 Series parts are good enough.

I recently went through my braking system and there are the items I would address. I also run 33” tyres:

1. Replace front pads with factory pads
2. Sand rotors first and see if this gets rid of the pulsing. Warped rotors symptoms many times are actually incomplete pad deposition on the braking surface of the rotors.
3. Baseline the rear drums, pistons and ensure factory setup is per the FSM.
4. Confirm LSPV is adjusted correctly.

As others have stated, upgrading calipers is not required and might in fact be masking other issues with the braking system.

Once this is complete and nothing is out of spec, your braking performance should easily lock up your wheels at speeds less that 40kph. Above that I can threshold brake my 75 easily and actually overpowering the system reduces stopping power. I also went with the 80 series booster and clevis from @cruisermatt and this made a nice difference to the pedal modulation. Clevis pictured below which extends the rod for proper pedal height. Not sure if this is required for your truck but wanted to include this in case.

Thanks for the advice! I'll take the front wheels off today and inspect the front brakes. I'll definitely be getting the 80 series booster at some point.
